I need some advice. I recently inherited a bunch of coins that probably have more sentimental value than monetary value. My grandparent, who was a waiter through the 1930's and 1960's, made a point of saving any silver coins he got in his tips. I think he believed in saving precious metal rather than collecting coins -- because all those coins were tossed into steel cookie cans, paper bags, socks, or whatever. All the coins are in very bad condition. But, they are interesting to me because I had never seen all these different looking dimes and quarters from the 1920's and 1930's. Even some coins from the late 1890's. Yes, lots of silver dollars and half dollars from the 1950's and 1960's too. The bottom line is that I have 14 lbs of these poor-condition silver coins. Oh, and he also started saving copper pennies too -- 16 lbs of those. So, because it is my Grandpa's and he worked hard for all those and saved them and gave them to me -- I don't want to sell them or treat them as scrap metal. I'd like to save them in a better way than in cans and bags. Maybe sort them and categorize them. But, I don't want to spend a LOT of money on airtight containers or anything. So -- how would you recommend I care for these coins? (Keep in mind there is 30 lbs of them to store!) Thank you! Erin P.S. Before this, I had a casual interest in collecting coins. I've saved almost all the State quarters, and a few of the Presidential dollar coins in my Whitman Classic albums. Wow, my coin collecting really grew all of a sudden!
Get some of those plastic? coin tubes the dealers have and store the coins in those. Also, my Granny put silver dimes from when she worked at a bar, in a glass cigar tube with a plastic stopper and they went 20 years or better with no toning and it was a perfect fit.PM me and I can get you some previously used tubes for pretty cheap or trade for something if u want.
I agree. They're inexpensive and protect very well. Not to mention they make it a lot easier to store the coins, versus a lot of odd-shaped containers. Guy~
Check out the tubes at places like air-tites.com http://www.air-tites.com/square_coin_tubes.htm#numis_tube They are very inexpensive and do a nice job of holding bulk coins. If there are some nice coins in the lot, you might want to check out some of the 2x2 cardboard holders also. They are very inexpensive. http://www.air-tites.com/Cardboard_2x2_Coin_Holders.htm Enjoy sorting them out and post some pic's for us!
