How to stop your relatives from making numismatic gifts?

As I understood, someone is trying to buy me a coin for holidays, and I really dont want them to. They know, and i repeated over and over that I do not collect American coinage. Still , this someone is hunting for a good coin with zero numismatic knowledge. What would you do?

Hit them over a head with a $20 gold piece, and then ask for that?
When they see the price they'll probably stop, or, if they don't: hey, you still got gold!

 

Well I think its nice of them to try to think of something you like---even if you don't collect US coins now you might down the road....
I wouldnt' say anything about it---maybe they have found a World coin----and if not you can always sell it or trade it for a coin you really want.

Don`t be angry and remember: family is your only treasure.

 

They know you enjoy coin collecting, and want to get you something that interests you. You might suggest that they get you some supplies, like some Airtite holders, or something similar to save them the trouble of attempting to find a coin for you.

 

Now that's a good idea :thumb: very practical as well.

I think that as coin collectors our main goal should be to get others, especially our family and friends, interested in the hobby. We can always use new individuals in the hobby. If we do this, then they will become well informed when purchasing us numismatic gifs at Christmas.

Lol.....I know that this is not always feasible.....but expanding the hobby should be on of our goals....shouldn't it?

 

My goal is to get people what might suit them and with the people I know, a coin would disappoint...I dont push my hobby on others...when I talk coins their eyes glass over and they are just waiting for a chance to change the subject I would say nothing in this case, accept whatever gift they get me with thanks...if it doesnt suit me, maybe sell it and get something I like.

 

I didnt want a lot of oddball stuff that i didnt want to collect, so when we did our list exchange for our secret santa, I had dansco albums, boxes, locks, 2X2's and the like plus some of th ehigher value coins I wanted (1916D Merc and the like).

If anything, like mentioned above, use the gifts as bartering, trading and sellign to further your collection. It isnt any worse than returning a gift from Wallie World.

 

Most of my family asked me what I wanted for Christmas. Luckily I'm not too picky about what kind of coins I get, so I told them if its old and silver I'll like it. In your case, I would just tell them that you collect world coins, and hope for the best. Good Luck.

 

I wish my relatives give me gifts of Chervonets, gold coins of 10 Rubles, but they not care enough for give me on New Years holiday.

 

I have a one chervonets note.

But if somebody asked, I'd say get me a gift certificate to a good coin store. Although I don't usually want to drive into Pittsburgh (the closest really good - and recommended - dealer), I will if I have a gift certificate to him.

 

Vlad, I see your post has generated a lot of interest in the Forum, and I don't mean to be impolite, but really I don't think it's an appropriate question for this board. It's really not a numismatic question. It's a human-relations, "Dear Abby" type question. "What do I do about a difficult relative?" I doubt that anybody on this board has any more wisdom than you have. I think all questions dealt with here should be about coins, not human relations.

 

take what they give you , thank them and move on . it is nice to be thought of even if it may not be what you want. Heck at least they are doing something for you

 

My relatives would never attempt to buy me anything numismatic.If they did,I'd probably have a stroke.They are clueless and I love them that way.

 

It's a gift. Accept it, say thank you, and be happy that someone was thoughtful enough to go out and buy such an unusual gift instead of pulling something off of the bargain table at the local department store marked "70% OFF!"

 

Hey, why not give a list to your local coin shop and mention to your friends that that is where you usually shop.
He may be able to guide them along.

who wouldnt? Who wants a coin from not even near your field knowingly that your relatives overpaid may be 2-3 times for it?

Because they may do something silly like going to HSN and get ripped off!
After all, they don't know that the prices are ridiculous.
