I am interested in error coins, very interested, but I would love some tips on how to spot them, and perhaps where I could find a list of noted errors to look for?
There are several books you should take a look at. Start with Alan Herbert's "Official Price Guide to Mint Errors." It is a great, in depth classification of errors. http://www.amazon.com/Official-Pric...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245789198&sr=1-1 A more recent book, out in the past couple of months, is "World's Greatest Mint Errors" by Mike Byers. I haven't read this book yet, but I've heard it was good. http://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Greate...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245789198&sr=1-2 You should also look at some of the noted error websites, such as CONECA. Fred Weinberg's website is also very interesting. He's got some great pieces for sale.
Here is a packed site of information; http://koinpro.tripod.com/ and on the left side of that page is http://koinpro.tripod.com/ErrorVarietyList.htm Which gives a price list for many of the error/variety coins and some photos and also this list of illustrated articles that will raise your enthusiasm http://koinpro.tripod.com/educationalimagegallery.htm Jim
I like the Ken Potter sites as shown above. I have also found a ton of info on the coppercoins.com site. It only shows pennies though. But as far as I am concerned, starting with pennies first is my preference. I wish someone would publish a book on all the examples shown on that site. There are over 2,000 different varieties that exist for just pennies! But, I think it would be kinda hard, because that site is kinda of a "living" site, because new varieties are found all the time. Also, the Cherrypickers guide is helpful as well. Good Luck!
