Guys... I'm contemplating selling my paper currency & coinage due to stressful times and desperate need of money... As far as coinage... I have nothing spectacular... a couple 2 cent pieces and bunch of silver... But as far as my paper currency, I have Hawaiian notes, african notes, silvers, reds, practically every year of the green seals... for $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20... damn near a thousand bucks maybe in face value... not sure... been awhile since it was counted... The question is... how do I sell them? Individually? All together? Or in sets? What's your advice! If i decide to sell... I'll post pictures of course.
well i'll post a link to a place where i download the pictures... it would be too much to upload here *L*
If you know what you want for them try the Open section here first (no listing fee, commissions, etc.). If that doesn't work you're out nothing & you can try a dealer or ebay. In my experience you generally get more overall by selling items individually.
Xeno108,are you giving up on this wonderful hobby of ours? You certainly had a lot of fun showing us photos of your banknotes,& educating us in the process.I enjoyed seeing some nice notes that I had never seen before. Aidan.
I would try Ebay, and sell them individually.. I know alot of folks (like me) would love some of the items you mentioned you had, but could not even think about buying the whole kit-n-kaboodle.... ps, send me a Pm if you put them up on Ebay
I hate to see you leaving our hobby xeno. I made the mistake of selling my coin collections two different times and decided that it'll never happen again. The rough times will pass and you'll be glad that you held on to all of that stuff. I hope things work out for you.
If you sell at ebay, you get more people coming to your auction but the ebay fees is pretty high. Look for those auction site where it is free of charge.
thanx for making me feel so special... i have had lots of fun with my collection... and I might go ahead and keep it... a lot of people at my work (they all know how crazy I am with currency) persuaded me against it... so the financial times will have to just get tough... I'm wondering though if i'm getting obsessed with the hobby though... I scan every serial that goes through my hands! It's clouding my mind i think! Maybe i just need a break from it.
Xeno108,you need to have a break from it for a while, but don't give up on what you love doing as a passion.I've been in the same boat as you have, but did I give up on collecting banknotes & coins? No,I didn't. Aidan.
Well I hope you decide to remain in the hobby and continue to enjoy your collection. If you really need to sell, maybe you can just thin your collection a bit and keep your favorite notes. As for an outlet, I would suggest the Open Forum here or on ebay (paper seems fairly strong on there right now). Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
I agree with shortgap. If you decide you have to sell, pick the stuff you're least attached to and then sell only as fast as necessary End result would be the same, but at least you get a chance to think it over
Where are you located (just the closest major city)? Many people here have learned which dealers automatically pay fair price and which ones pay fair price only if you know what it is and then you still have to haggle for it. That said, I recently came into alot of error coins that I couldn't keep and in the course of selling them, I learned which dealers paid an honest price and which ones would take a little old lady for a ride. To be fair, I can't ding the handful of dealers that admitted they didn't know enough about the errors and as a result, wouldn't make an offer. But of the some 40 dealers I shopped, only 2 offered a fair price that was based on what they were going to sell the coins for. I'm glad for this lesson as now I know which dealers I would prefer to patronize when I buy coins/coin supplies. My point was, if you don't know what dealer to look to, it would help to talk to someone that has sold stuff to know who is honest in your area.
Glad to hear you will stick with the hobby .... Tough times come, and they do go ... hopefully you will be able to kepp all the treasures you have collected... i wish GOOD LCUK!!!
Good luck on selling your items, and hope all goes well with the financial troubles. They will pass, and hopefully you can rebuild your collection later on in the future. Hopefully you can still stick around here! Take care, and best of luck. Phoenix
Oh yeah, a last piece of advice is don't sell anything that you know you will be buying back. The spread will be enough to justify making other solutions work.
Which probably explains why you're such an asset here on banknotes. Glad to hear you're going to stick this one out and hang onto your collection. That obsession of yours...we depend on it.
