My dad had some silver medals and a few coins stashed in the garage. A while back we had a pipe bust. And we just now realized that these items were soaking in milewy nasty water. Some of them still look great, while others are brown and ugly. I was thinking of soaking them in distilled water and then gently washing them with soap, and then carefully rinsing them.
    Any thoughts?

I would get them out of the moist or wet environment as soon as possible. Even if it means discarding its original holders. They will be worth a lot less corroded than in replacement 2x2 holders. You have the right idea on preserving them. You may need to use acetone, if there are any areas which demand more attention than water can take care of.

Yes, we got them out of the damp area. Any many of them were in 2x2's which were moldy and nasty, and we already got rid of those. Alot of the silver still looks nice, so they'll get a quick rinse. The nastier ones will probably need some soap though.
