I asked in another post about ideas on what kind of collection to start. I guess I'm going to go with a non-standard collection, with no ready-made album to stick coins in. How have other people presented these non-standard collections? Pictures would be most welcome!
To the best of my knowledge there are no non-standard albums. Perhaps the best solution for you would be to purchase an album that only utilizes pockets instead of coin sized holes. This would allow you to place the coins of your non-standard collection in Ait-Tites or a similar product and then place the coin holder in the pocket. You should also consider whether or not you will be collecting slabbed coins or just raw coins. This will have a bearing the size of the pockets you need. Hope this helps.
You could also do a 20th century type set has all kinds of holes to fill from cents thru dollars and label it yourself.
If you are using 2X2 flips (or the staple kind), you could also get a three ring binder and some pages that the 2X2s fit in (usually 20 per page) and create your own album. Be sure that you get non-pvc products to minimize potential damage to your coins. Most flips will allow you to put a card insert opposite the coin. Information about each coin would be included on its card, which would be visible on the back side of the page. The down side to that would be you would have to remove each 2X2 from the page to view the reverse of that coin. One way to go is to put your coins in safety flips and to put the safety flips in 2x2 coin boxes. Don't use regular flips -- the plasticizers in them can damage coins over time. Most safety flips use low-plasticizer PVC. There's one brand of safety flip that contains no PVC -- Kointain Saflips, which are made of Mylar instead. The safety flips let you attribute the coins on a paper insert that you can insert into the flip's second pocket.
I use the 2x2 cardboard flips with the mylar windows and place those in the 8x11 plastic holders(20 to a page) and put those in a 3 ring binder. I can move the coins around to whatever configuration I like.
