I mentioned this in another thread. I was wondering how to fill the "holes" of the Morgans I cannot afford. I hope this link works: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=196946 If not just go to www.sportsmansguide.com and do a search on "coins".
Buying that stuff wouldn't "complete" your collection. If all you want is a representation of coins, go on-line to major auctions, grab their pictures, and resize them to fit in 2x2s or other holders, and Wellah!
That's like looking at a picture of steak while you eat hamburger. Or...it is like pretending there is no "hole" in the wall as you cover it with a picture. Same effect...same symbolism.
Personally, I think these coins are a great way to fill in holes in a collection for those that cannot afford, or do not wish to spend the money on, more expensive key date coins. I know of many a dealer who sell various different copies for just this purpose.
Save, save, save. I know I'll probably never have the 1895 Proof or the 1893-s. The others, however, are obtainable. It just takes time and an understanding wife. heh heh. I put aside just a little cash each payday till I'm in the market to buy a certain date. Once I got it, I start saving for the next one. I can live with a couple of holes in my Dansco album.
they are called FAKES! Nothing more or nothing less. Why spend good hard earned money on something no one else wants or needs? While I love to fill an album I find those empty holes are fuel for the hunt and I do enjoy the challenge even if it does take years. If you have a real big problem with empty holes, CHANGE the method of containment or storage. Go to airtites as you never see a hole! Don't waste your hard earned money on copies as in the end you really have nothing and regardless of how hard you look at them, well you still have holes!
yah i agree i hate the copies they sell in those magazines i always get call tribute sets. even though i got that gold eisonhower, i would never buy fakes
Fakes are copies of coins that are produced with the express purpose of fooling others for the financial gain of those who may create and or sell them. There are many legimate copies out there which play an important role for those collectors that choose not to have the holes and would rather look at a decent and inexpensive copy. You would not find me placing on these copies in any set I own, nor as a dealer do I sell them, but I most certainly do not hate them and see nothing wrong with other collectors making a decision to finish a set with them.
I am sorry. I seemed to have struck a nerve when all I intended to do was provide information to other coin people for them to use or not. I really wasn't looking for opinions as to if they were fakes or not. I plan on getting a Dansco album for the Morgans that I currently have and on another thread I requested information on how everyone handled the holes that they have. I basically received four inputs. As for myself I probably will never have the 1893-S, (MS-60 = $55,000 ) even if I save $10 a week. So I was just trying to find an alternative since I would rather spend the money on a Mustang Cobra.
Nice car! Good taste! Let's see a key date Morgan or the car...it is a tough choice. Personally, if that happen to me and the choice was either an early 1980's Monte Carlo SS or a 1972 Dodge Charger, I may have to go for the car. After all, wouldn't you love to pull up beside some kid that thinks their Honda Civic is really "cool", only to have them eat rubber from a "real" muscle car?? Nothing is more funny than watching some punk "try" to race their Civic down the street. Key Morgan dollar or the Cobra??? I guess it would all depend on what the ladies like.
Hmmm... Mustang Cobra would be cool but I just spent my money on a Redfire '05 GT and am in fact having a little fun now and again with those Honda Civics ;-)
Exiled, Personally, I don't care for the copies. But, if you like them and they work for you, go for it! I always feel that you should collect only what you like and enjoy, so for you and others, if that includes a few copies to fill the holes, awesome! Thanks for some good information for those that like copies.
u are all old, I can run faster than a Civic, nice 05 Cdcda, but u gotta go with a 911 Turbo or a skyline or even the Cobra is nice. People like those hummers are retarded because those are actually slow and way to big. Go wit hthe 911 for speed
Off topic but, the 911 is a whole different caliber of automobile. Superb handling, amazing performance in a body that is drop dead gorgeous. The Mustang is, simply put, a muscle car. I intead to install a supercharger and I am sure in a straight line it will match the performance of the more expensive Porsche, but hit those corners and forget it. And, it'll never look quite as good as the 911!
Mustang a muscle car??? Thats crazy. If you are talking the new one or anything post 85 or around there, then u are talking crap. People dont realize its just junk. Theres nothing special they put in their that i couldnt get at the dollar store. They upgrade only a few things, barely making it faster than a modern car
The 2005 Mustang is about as "muscle car" as it gets. As for the dollar store, I suppose if you made 30,000 or so trips you might be able to put one together ;-) But alas, this is a coin forum, I would encourage you to post in one of the many Mustang forums on the 'Net in regards to this topic. I happen to frequent the Mustang forums at http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/ if you want to continue the conversation.
Exiled, I think GDJMSP and tcore have it right -- collect what you want and display it however you want. Your collecting objective is your target and it should give you pleasure to complete it as you choose. In one sense, these Morgan copies are similar to proof coins or any of the contrived rarities made or distributed by influential politicians or mint employees. They never circulated nor were they intended to circulate, so they're no different than anything made for collection only, and are not "real". It is just as legitimate to collect these as it is to own any collectible, as long as you're not trying to claim it is something it is not. By the way, I collect proof coins and enjoy them.
