i'm interested in being a online coin dealer as a hobby , but i need help on how to start. So any advice would be appreciated
One thing is that a coin dealer (at least I don't think so) cann't think of Coins as a hobby...he can't save the coins because he is a dealer and must sell them to make a living.... There has been some threads on this so you might try searching for them.... Speedy
Welcome to the forum coincrazy. Are you a knowledgeable collector? Can you grade both circulated and MS/PF grade coins? Do you know how and where to get the latest pricing information? Do you have a library of reference books on the category or categories of coins you want to deal in? Do you have adequate finances to acquire a reasonable inventory? Do you have a basic understanding of how to run a business, including the accounting aspects? I've only sampled the subject, but if you can't answer all of those questions affirmatively, how can you expect to deal in coins successfully? Speedy is absolutely right about the dealer/hobby question. Unless you have unlimited financial resources, you can't really "collect" inventory. Also, as he said, there have been many prior threads on the subject. Click here and here for a couple of them.
Look up "National Dealer" on the members list and read his old posts on the matter. National Dealer was kind enough to have given a very thoughtful discourse on this stated topic. Note: National Dealer has removed himself from the active list on this forum so please respect that and not e-mail him.
Hello and welcome coincrazy, we might be related since our handles are similar. I would suggest you sharpen your coin collecting skills to a very high degree before even considering being a coin dealer. You must think like a collector yet be strictly business when coin dealing. I am able to speak from a position of experience as I managed a successful coin shop for a number of years. Be a great collector first, then become a great dealer.
Latest I heard on our Savannah friend is that there is a class-action lawsuit pending. I have warned countless people about this person and they still respond to me. They were all happy that she was nahrud' off of EBay. Funny part was that yesterday I reported three listings that violate Ebays' coin listing policy and she was booted 24 hours later. I think it was the icing on the cake. When you are warned on breaking policies they say that you do it again and sterner measures will be taken. I and a lot of others must have finished her off.
Lol, hmm, but seriously guys who do you call a disorganized collector??? what aspects describes a disorganized collector?
I used to bring all kinds of neat stuff back from coin shows only to find out that I already owned most of it already. Now, I never go to a show without a LIST.
Well Ivan maybe that's what I am. After all - I don't fit the definition of a collector at all I don't collect coins by date or mint. I don't collect sets ( except for one ). I don't even try to collect just the coins of one country. I have one rule - if I like it - I buy it Don't know how ya can get more disorganized than that
I know what you mean, until I got albums for my Lincoln and Jeffersons all I had were like 20 cents from the same date and mint mark and so on...same with the state quarters...didn't had a list so I was always wondering everytime I had one in my pocket change... "do I already have this one?" ... I try to be a LITTLE more organized now with some of my coin related stuff.
hehehe I don't consider myself too organized either...or maybe not organized at all! that's why I made the excell sheet...the only stuff I have organized are my L.cents and my J.Nickels (both in albums...) the rest are all together in 2X2 or in small bags (the duplicates) hehe...or just on a box , I like that! someday I will put it in practice there's a lot of stuff I like/want/but can't buy!
