How often do you browse for coins?

How often do you guys browse for coins (ancient/modern)? and what avenues do you mostly use?

I check new eBay listings a couple of times a day, and Biddr every couple of days

 

Great question, @JayAg47 — VCOINS mostly followed by ANACS and NGC certified ancients on eBay.

 

Unlike Dr. Pepper....10~2~&~4 I'm more like oh heck it's 5:30 am lets see whats out there...and that usually ends around 5:30 pm dinner break...but a 6pm I'm at it again.... yeah I got a problem...
And I don't drink Dr. Pepper....

 

Haha .. multiple times a day. For what I collect, LRBs, eBay is still the primary source, but also VCoins, MA Shops, biddr, sixbid, and a few individual dealer's sites.

Once every few months I might randomly do a deep dive and just try using Google using various search terms to see what comes up. I once stumbled upon a great coin on a Mexican e-commerce site ... you never know!

You forgot another option. "Once in a while"

 

Is there an option for: "Wrote software to automatically look for new lots on VCoins/MA-Shops and send a text message if a new coin matches set parameters"

I voted "Multiple times a week". I've been a serious coin collector for over 60 years & at one time a coin dealer. Since retiring I probably browse my own collection more often than most collectors. I probably browse auction listings several times a week. Browsing for coins several times a day seems excessive to me . Maybe the collectors who can't pull away from the hobby for a day or two should spend some time self-reflecting....

I usually watch Biddr auctions for the (few) auction houses I am buying from.
I am seriously considering the option of requesting a permanent Biddr ban (joking) because usually I find tempting coins in an auction and decide to have a go.

My goal next year is to buy less coins, but only choose truly interesting ones. I am doing this in the last months, I need to raise the standards a little.

I also like browsing past auctions, as it gives me an idea about prices for certain coins and more often than once I found coins that are not popular but interesting for me.

 

Why waste time self-reflecting when you could be browsing for coins ?

 

I usually go through EBay once a week, and check SixBid once or twice a month or so. That seems to work well enough for me. Most of the coins I'm looking for are off the beaten track and as such don't appear in auctions that frequently. I sometimes also do Google searches - like @Heliodromus, I've found interesting coins in some unlikely places as well.

 

I have alerts set up on ebay to let me know when listings with certain key words pop up, which often happens every day or several times a day.

I get on to biddr periodically to browse, although I've been cutting back a bit - I tend to go into auctions with a window shopping attitude, and leaving with a "gotta have it!" Haven't bought much since about June, actually, except for lots which I mostly intended to flip (but usually keep at least one coin!)

 

Once a day, half an hour before bedtime, with water or tea.
Works like a charm, no hangover.

And then there's the weekly Numismatists Anonymous meetings, of course...

 

Well right now, once a day maybe, because I don't have much money to spend. But at my worst, every waking moment, lol.

Trying to spend more time appreciating the coins I already have.

Here is how to add an item alert message, watch items, bookmark categories, shops, etc. on MA-Shops. This can be a great time saver...but looking in real time is fun too.

- To watch items, click on the eye in the detailed item view or on the "Watch this item" link in an item list.
- To bookmark categories, click on the eye symbol next to a category in any item list.
- To bookmark a shop, click on the "Follow" button on the top right of the search.
- To bookmark a search result, click on the “Follow Search” button on the top right of the search results.

You will receive a message once new items have been added to your favorite categories and shops. The same applies to new items matching your bookmarked search items.

 

I have lengthy watch lists on both MA-Shops and V-Coins, and check them both regularly to look at the coins and see which ones are still available should I suddenly have enough money to splurge. Admittedly, a number of them are way out of my usual price range, and I put them on my watch list simply because I enjoy looking at them periodically, and imagining being able to buy them. Some have been on my watch lists for almost two years!

I should note that V-Coins allows you to view only the coins on your watch list that are still available for sale, so you don't have to scroll through a bunch of sold coins. As far as I can tell, MA-Shops does not have that option: to avoid viewing sold coins, one has to delete them manually from the list. When I do go through that process, I leave the ones I bought myself, and delete only those bought by others.

In addition, I check the new ancient coins on both sites at least once or twice every day, unless I'm really busy on something else. Although sometimes even when I am really busy, I check both of them as a procrastination device!

I also check NumisBids -- on which I have a Want List, mostly of certain Roman Republican coins -- every few days, even though I rarely actually bid at auctions, and the only ones in which I've succeeded have been some Nomos Obolos auctions.

 

Once or twice a week actually. I get emails from m-a shops weekly with new additions, blasts from CNG and Leu, FSR, etc. I usually check vcoins once in awhile. What seems to drive it is desiring a coin with a certain reverse or from a certain epoch that I find interesting. Then I will start searching on google.
