I usually don't pickup problem coins, but this one really caught my eye. The problem I'm having is I have no clue of it's value with the mild corrosion/ scratch. What would you be willing to pay/put it's worth? TYVM http://www.ebay.com/itm/25106939266...dividual&hash=item3a74e6e71a&autorefresh=true
Usually for small damage, I just go down one full grade. So I would pay the F-12 price, and absolutely no more! I'd probably be reluctant to pay more than the VG-8 price though.
Since that scratch and corrosion was caused by James Bowie using it for a back up to punch a hole in his belt at the Alamo in 1836, it's now a priceless one of a kind sought by colle ctors the world over. Now you just need the paperwork to back up the story.
Maybe this will help... http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251064678573+ To be honest, I wouldn't touch it at anywhere near even the (above) link price.
Someone may have picked up a real bargain here. While most are looking at it as a common 1802, this may be an extremely rare die state I of S-227 before the usual clash marks have developed and the reverse has been polished to remove prior clash marks as well. I would have to get one of the experts to verify and authenticate the die state, but it sure looks like it to me. Of course, it's hard to verify through the plastic casket. I'm not sure how much die state rarities are worth, but with 4-12 examples (definition of extreemly rare) and VF+ detail, even damaged it should be of interest to our mighty band of EAC collectors.
