I was just curious because I bought a nice PCGS MS-63 Morgan yesterday and I wanted to know if it had any value above that in the9 red book. Thanks guys, I appreciate any responses!

I personally do not use the red book for any pricing information - I would check realized auctions from heritage. It is free to join and there is a lot of good information available there. And depending on who you ask you will get PCGS or NGC coins carry a premium. Not always true - depends on the coin in the holder usually.

Really depends who is buying it. Some people won't pay more than as if the coin was raw.

I don't buy coins at higher prices because a TGP slapped their opinion on the coin. I buy the coins, not the slabs they come in. ;)

They carry no premium at all. The coin is worth just as much raw as it is slabbed.

The only advantage the coin being slabbed has is that it makes it easier to sell. It increases your buying audience.

I buy coins. The hard plastic just gets in my way.

Yup, if I end up buying one in those annoying cases, I crack the coin out and rub them for good luck!

Depends on year, mint, varieties, VAMs, etc.

But then again, a raw coin; one that is not slabbed by the TPGs, can have the same variety and VAM as a slabbed one.

    Both are worth the same.

    What year and mint?

The only premium a slab carries is the reassurance that the coin is genuine. Common date coins usually carry no premium unless its heavily toned as collectors are usually wary of colorful toning. And then of course there is the key date high grade coins.

O.K. here's another opinion. If I saw identical coins at the same price, I would buy the slabbed one.

If they were valued at $100, I might pass on the raw one and buy the slabbed one. At $300, I would probably pass on the raw one. At $50, I might pay $5 more. At $25, I might still pay $5 more. At $15, same-same.

The convenient resale-ability is important to me. As is the genuine status, especially for online purchases.

Thank you for all of your answers. I understand how vague my question was:) Oh, and just to clarify, the coin is an 1885-O. I know, very little value:)

So, how much did you end up paying for it?

It's still worth melt at least, which is more than some 3rd world families make in a month or longer. ;)

rodeoclown, I payed $54. Might be a little more than most of you would pay, but I'm still very satisfied with my purchase.

If the coin looks good, I don't think that's an unreasonable amount. I've seen several common dates at MS-62 going in the low- to mid-$40s. I'm not looking right now, but if I saw an NGC/PCGS MS-63 Morgan which looked nice to me, for $54 I'd be tempted to buy it. Congrats!

Do you like the coin? Does the slab make you feel better about the purchase? Was it worth $54 to you? If yes then its a good buy. :)

Its your hobby man, don't stress the prices if the coin is worth it to you.

And that's all that matters, if you're happy with it, it doesn't matter how much you paid. :thumb:
