How much is a 1983 copper penny worth?

I heard from a friend that they can be worth quite a bit. I looked on ebay and I can't seem to find any. Anyone have any idea how much one is worth?

You can't find them on ebay because there aren't many of them around and they probably sell on auction sites that specialize in high end stuff.

 

Just to clarify the question you are asking,

1. Are you asking about a 1983 cent that was 100% copper? - No , the US has not minted such.

2. Are you asking about the 1983 Brass clad cent? Yes, it has minted some.

3. If you are asking about a 1983 cent struck on a bronze planchet such as in pre-1982, it is easy to tell the difference by weight.

 

The most recent sell I know of was with Stacks & Bowers where an MS62BN went for over $22k.
