Other than the obvious "whatever someone is willing to pay for it", how you determine what price to ask for such a thing? (the coin on the left is just for comparison purposes)
An "authentic" No FG has a nice premium associated with it but it must be authentic. By that, I mean that in 1972 there are quite a few 1972-D coins where the Initials are "grease filled". As such, they have no premium. A grease filled coin still has the letters or parts of the letters visible simply by tilting the coin in the right light. A true No FG has no initials since they were polished off during die retrestment due to a clash. From all that Ive seen, authentic No FG coins are of a single die marriage where the obverse has distinct die polishing. Current PCGS Price Guide values range from $275 in XF40 up to $650 in MS64. Only 24 have met the designation and the MS64 is a recent addition. I expect that the prices are sustainable to a certain degree in that they have been worth "hundreds" for better than 4 years. The 1972-D is often overshadowed by the 1982 No FG coins but only in shear numbers as the 1982 coins can usually be found "by the roll" and are quite common. 1983 and later coins do exist but are often the result of grease filling. For your particular coin, a close up of the Initials area and the "WE TRUST portion of the motto is required for proper attribution.
Back out from TRUST so that the 2 in the Date shows. What I am looking for is this: These are consistent on all 1972-D No FG Coins.
How about this? The bad news is that I don't see the little lines/scratches to which you were referring...
well thank you, my new best friend! ;-) Now what do I do? I *think* that submitting it to PCGS (or NGC?) would be a good idea, but I've never done that. Is that my next step? (I realize it's not MS70 or anything, but hey...)
(I guess the question is, will paying to have it officially labeled and graded be worth the fees or would I get just as much selling it now?)
Well, that is a really good question. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3284&lot=1696 http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3303&lot=1883 http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3379&lot=1925 http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3448&lot=1813 A lot depends upon the coins grade and whether or not someone is seeking an upgrade. IMO, the coin is worth at least the grading costs which would be around $60 if it was sent in on a solitary submission.
Thanks for the links. I forgot to look on teletrade. Do you all think that my coin is at least an AU53? Is it okay to post a "guess the grade" in a separate thread here?
