I wonder when the United States will finally end the penny or at the very least end the lincoln cents. what can 1 penny buy? absolutely nothing.
This really is an error. I go through tons of rolls of One Cent specimens and have seen almost everything in terms of errors. I've found similar ones with the rim cud by the date. I do see brockage of the word "CEN" in "CENT" by where the word "TRUST" is usually located. I would get this coin certified and try to sell it for $100. So yes, you found a winner! Congratulations. The rest of you folks need to look at pictures more carefully before coming to a conclusion. I'm amazed nobody noticed before I did?!?
So if I run over a penny with a 16 wheeler mac truck it is considered an error worth $100? If that were true I'd be quite the rich young gentleman right now.
The only error I see here is in the tuck driver who did not move out of the way of this penny as it rolled across the street.
There is no cud by the date, on this coin. The letters CEN were created by placing one cent on top of a second cent and hitting it with a hammer. All the damage you see was caused in the same manor.
Might there be a way the coin could get caught in something causing it to stretch and then lean into the relief of another specimen? I'm trying to imagine how this coin got the way it did. I'm just amazed I'm the only one seeing this. I hope the owner decides to submit this coin for examination. I'd be curious if the graders see the error(s) I see.
Looking carefully, I see nothing except damage from being hit with another coin on top. The corresponding damage on the reverse would indicate this also. I see no way this could happen in the minting process.
I think you need to learn more about the minting process. Furthermore, I don't think you should give advice about spending another person's money for something this blatantly PMD. Chris
As someone who has studied error coins for over 20 years it is my opinion that this coin is clearly NOT an error. This is a case of someone modifying this coin to try to deceive people into thinking that it is an error. I have literally looked at hundreds of examples of these. DO NOT send this in for certification... That is bad advice in this case.
