Alright guys, went metal detecting today, and found this barber dime. I hit it with my pin point and scratched the surface. Id say without the scratches it would be a modest vf40 thats suppost to be 90 bucks. So what is it now g4 or worse what would you grade it. And pay for it i guess. Im a big boy so feel free to hurt my feelings with your honest opinions. BTW it is a 1905 normal O not a micro. curls of hair are barely visible just above the liberty headband
When you mean pinpoint, a plastic electronic pinpointer, or a metal probe? If plastic, those scratches were there before, so not your fault. DO NOT use a metal probe , I've seen some very nice coins RUINED with them. Save about $130 and get a Garret Propointer. Not cheap, but saves you time and lowers the risk of damaging a coin. You will LOVE it.
What kind are you using? I can recommend you an older Whites Detector, the Eagle 2, they sell for about $200 on eBay. They are older, but they are digital, and they were the best machine in the early 90s, $800 new. You cannot buy a detector for less than $450 new that will match what this can do!
I cant see that happening... possibly, you pushed a rock across the coin with the pin pointer right before you retrieved the coin...???
I can't see it either. I know the propointer has a range of about 2-3 inches. This allows you to find a coin before you dig. Some other models, you have to be right on top of the coin.
No need to have two threads going on the same coin/subject. I think one of the mods might combine the two so we can address your questions better.
The smallest scratches could destroy some nice coins My morgan has a flawless back... but a mangled front...
Even if the coin was not scratched, the black spot on it more than likely would of earned it enviro damage. I would sell it on feebay as is, what kind of pointer are you using? Might use some of the money from the dime to get a propointer.
Not sure. I have not heard much luck with the fisher one. I would sell it too and use that and the dime money towards a propointer. The propointer also vibrates if your using headphones or are in a noisy area.
