    Hi Shirley,

Are you refering to the 1943 steel cent? The mintage of these pennies were very high, and they are not terribly costly. In average circulation a steel penny can be sold for about 5 to 7 cents a piece.

the 1943 copper penny is more myth than reality. I don't think they ever authenticated a real one, but I haven't looked into it much myself. If what you have is a 1943 copper penny, I would guess it has probably been either plated or date altered.

    Welcome!!

Actually they made over a billion of them. Unless we are talking about the copper ones. If they are copper colored, they are probably fakes. We would need to see a picture.

Are they silver colored? Then they are zinc coated steel. The copper was needed for the war. Even in mint state condition, they are only worth around $6 to $15.

Mintage was in the millions, not billions.

You are correct, over a million of them, not a billion  I should have said a boatload ;)

More than you can shake a reasonably long wooden object at.

Last I heard there were 24 known examples of the '43 copper cent. They currently sell for about $150,000.

But as the others have said - they are likely counterfeits. The only way to find out for sure is to have them authenticated by one of the top grading companies.

I have 2 genuine 1943 copper cents. The bad news is they are Canadian! Seriously, try a magnet on them first.
