Someone asked me and I didn't know, nor do I think I once knew and and forgot it. I realized. I had no idea. It took a couple tries to Google, also. So, for your amusement, and then the burning question... WHY?
It should depend on the date, actually. This is great for figuring out certain VAMs and verifying authenticity.
I do know that the 1921s had fewer than the 1878-1904, due to the mint having destroyed the original casts or molds used to make the reed after 1904 and these were called "wide reed..." Otherwise I thought it was consistent, with a few exceptions early on. But? I'm not an authority by ANY stretch on this. I do remember one story of a Chinese counterfeit having ONE less than the authentic. Ha.
I went to school with three Reed’s in the same class. So get us together and we’ll stand on your Morgan then it will be 3 Reeds. Your welcome!
Just the fact that I do not know the answer to your ?, is down right embarrassing. Je suis tres bête. Dieu pardon moi, s'il vous plait?
Yes, you couldn't be more correct. You could study numismatics for many lifetimes, and still not know even close to everything. The Morgan Dollar itself, has a lot of interesting historical stories.
One deep mystery I wish I could learn the truth about was how the 14th and 15th stars got on that one run of 1817 Large Cents, and was it really that the die-maker came back from lunch a bit sloshed.
