Just curious...Anyone have an idea how many of these coins were made?

Not really minted. Instead - Were struck by a third party after the coin was released from the mint.

 

As many as they could sell at $4.99 each.

 

I think I've found 2 or 3 searching boxes. Glad I only paid 1 cent a piece

These weren't minted like that. They were counterstamped. It's damage.

 

They are called counterstruck or counterstamped Cents. They are actually PMD - Post Mint Damage

It is no more damage than the elongated coins. It's art...you might not like or appreciate it, but it is art.
