I recently bought my first pistol, at 56 years old. I sold on ebay for years, with no home protection but a rifle, but lately it's getting worse out there. Got my concealed carry license also.

I've never been robbed, but then again I live in Maine. For decades it was considered the safest state to live in, although I'm not sure that's still true. Still close to the top. Well, we have a bit of a drug problem, and alot more people from away have moved here, both from other states and other countries, and our crime keeps going up. I read stories about coin collections getting stolen here now, and I am glad that @Tom B and others convinced me to put the collection in a safety deposit box.

I have taken a concealed carry course many years ago, and also Maine is trying to go permit-free for concealed. Also, we allow open-carry. So, there may be some more home protection in my near future, with all the obvious upsides AND downsides that come with gun ownership.

And dont forget to insure you collection through Hugh Wood, regardless of if it's in a home safe, safe-deposit box at a bank, or otherwise.

I'm sorry but why not just move on? Why bring it up after 5 years? Maybe just maybe the guy needed help that he got in prison. I know that's probably not the case but it seems like you've spent a large part of your life dealing with this guy when you could just move on. Sorry just my two cents

Terrible advice. What if he tries to rob Chris again? He is certainly doing the right thing in tracking his home invader and understanding where he might go next.

I believe Chris might be worried that this fella hasn't just moved on.

Why? The guy is on the loose again. OP is the one that helped put him away. I'd be a tad worried and on edge too if I were him. You don't have a clue as to what these nuts are going to do.

Never broken into, but some coins taken by a friend on more than one occasion. Some accidentally considering it just pocket change and once out of desperation. I remain friends with them all.

Two addicts entered my home in 2009 looking for jewelry & electronics, and as fate would have it, I had almost my entire inventory at home from the bank that day . . . Lost pretty much the whole deal.

That's why my trusty safe is on standby, but I keep very little at home since Katrina anyway.

Won't fault anyone for taking any security measures listed but do you guys ever consider security cameras too? If a dumpy little two bit 7-eleven has them isn't your home worth having them?
If hidden well they go unnoticed. Hide the dvr too. I got a Samsung system from Walmart several years ago and it's still working great. You can check out what's going on at home on your cell from anywhere, any time. If you were ever accused of being somewhere when you were home alone, you've got proof. If somebody breaks in whether you're there or not, you've got proof. Somebody damages your house. Proof.
A 500 GB will store footage for up to 30 days before it over-writes. They're plug and play. You can install this stuff yourself and be up and running in hours. For what's available now, it's well worth it. The IR tech is really decent in pitch dark too. I've had an $80 camera last outdoors for several years. Hard winters. Hot summers. Still kicking. Works as good as day one.

Make sure to learn how to use it at the range. And please be very careful if you have young kids or grand kids in the house.

Cool old thread. I know it was said but I'll bring it up again.
Study and understand the gun laws in your state.

I lost most everything I had when I was about 12 or 13. They left my Lincoln set that was in a Whitman folder. Still have that set. Today that set is probably worth more than what they took.
This whole thing taught me a great lesson. I let too many people know that I collected coins.

yes, the kids are older, and i was surprised how hard it is to hit a 6 inch target from 20 feet away. lots of practice is in order.

I remember seeing a news article about how some guy's son stole his collection and was spending $5000 standing liberty quarters at face value on pizza. I don't know if I'd be madder that my son stole my collection or that he spent it at face value.

All these young people are giving my generation a bad name...

Must not have had a close relationship with his son for him to be that ignorant of what they were.

If you keep your coins at home, hide them very well. The biggest threat to your coin collection is not moisture, it's theft.

If you have an attic hide them in a very dark part of it.

The absolute worst place to store your coins is in a closet or drawer. Burglars are in a hurry and they look first in bedrooms and dump everything out of closets and drawers.

They don't have time to go digging around in dark attics or dark basements .

Two of the worst places to store coins are the attic and the basement........unless they're climate controlled. SDB is best but if your collection is large that may be a problem. SDB's are expensive. No easy solution..........
