I haven't been a member of Coin Talk for a year yet and it seems I have already noticed a lot of newbies show up, post a few times, and are never heard from again! Of course some may still be here and not posting, but I can't help but wonder how many realize they aren't going to get rich collecting coins, get discouraged and quit! I think the percentage is at least in the high 50's, what do you think! Also wondered if you have known some who fit that category! I can immediately think of 2!

Those that are genuinely interested will post in Chat, US or World sub-forums. The get rich quick crowd tend to populate Worth and Errors after a brief glimpse at a you-tube video. Also their attitude is different from people who are really interested.
I know this doesn't apply to all but is a generalisation based on what I see and read here. Sadly, a lot of people are also put off when they realise how important the minting process and die creation are, and the research and learning involved to understand even the basics.

Eh, it happens. I have been here over a decade now and have posted about it. We are one of the most Googled places for coin answers, so we get lots of people who have a couple of questions and then move on. It has always been a small core of participants whom you see month in and month out.

Like anything, takes a while to know the lay of the land, which posters to take more seriously than others, etc. For ancients, I have a few members in each area I know are true experts in that field so rely on their opinions more than other members for example.

Do you ever check on the "New Member" list? Many of them register and never post. Like you said, sometimes they post and are never heard from again.

Here is one who posted on a 4-1/2 year old thread. This happens a lot.

How long do you think he will last?

Indeed a different world today to include attention spans, ability to be/remain content, to study/research (too many wanting instant answers/rewards without effort) plus the rewards of doing many of these things on their own.

I think it is much higher than 50%.....probably closer to 75%.

I think so too, but definitely think it's at least 50%.

It is 50 percent, half of me wants to collect and the other half wants a career in movies.

How bout the ones from 14 years ago who post several 100 times and
just quit. They post hot and heavy for a few years and then, POOF.
I check their most recent posts, nothing controversial. They're discussing
two cent pieces, silver stacking, whatever. POOF their gone. I've PM'd
several and no response. Just curious as to that line of action/thought.
    Sorry about hijacking/derailing.

That's not hijacking!!! It's all part of the situation! I guess I'm just amazed how so many seem to think this is a get rich quick hobby! If you could get rich quick doing this it wouldn't be a hobby, it would be a highly sought after profession! Some are still posting in the "What's it worth" category! Go figure!!!

You're not hijacking anything. Your input is relevant to the discussion.

Currently, CT has just over 66,000 members, and at any given time there are a little more than 500 logged in. That is less than 1% of our membership. Of that number, how many do you think are posting? Just lurking?

Don't forget that a decent share of our members are in the older members, who eventually die , or find other interest in the Golden years ( whatever they are ) , or decide that life is more interesting than coins. Live long and prosper!!! Jim

True, latter being a happier answer than the former. I have asked my wife to post something here btw just in case. Hopefully a few decades off, but after this year who knows. Rough year. Fake elbow still not very "right".
