How is the actual size of a note determined from Pick?

I've been going through the copy of Vol. 2 of the Standard Catalog of World Coins just borrowed from my public library, and I can't find any explanation of the correlation between the size pictured and the size of the actual note.

Everything I am familiar with is shown smaller than actual size, but I can not find any measurement information, or anything in the general discussions disclosing a fixed relationship between the two sizes.

Are currency collectors just supposed to "know"?

It's been awhile since I used Pick, but I was under the impression that they did give the size of the note in millimeters as 123 X 456.
