I love the Buffalo/Indian Head nickel and even the new Westward Journey nickels and sets that the mint has recently produced. How difficult/expensive would it be to acquire a set of Buffalo nickels in EF-AU range? I see some dates liek the 1921S and 1926S are priced way over my budget in those grades but maybe the expensive ones I'd find in a lower grade.
Hi Scott, I like buffalo nickels too, and collected what I could find from bank rolls as a kid several decades ago now. Recently, I took those nickels (an incomplete set, of course) and put them into a generic "Nickels" album page, using the best (or in some cases, only) one I had from each year. That's a great way to get a "complete" set at low cost, since the expensive S and D mints are not necessary. Anyway, at my age, I'm lucky just to be able to read the dates, let alone the mint marks.
That makes two of us, and that is where the grandchildren come in. Get them to help, and make coin collectors of them.
Buffalo nickels are a favorite of mine also and your correct, EF-AU will cost you. But I think That Buffalos look best in F-EF and collecting in those grades will greatly reduce your costs, unless your looking to get ALL the varieties (3 legged etc.). Half the fun is tracking down each coin. Take your time.
Maybe you could put a set together that was one a year set. That way you wouldn't have to buy some of the more expensive coins.
Or you could pony up $13,000+ and buy a complete set.Here's what Bestcoin says they're worth: AU-12,739 MS-60-17,934 MS63-42,394 MS64-84,982 MS65-410,332 LOL
