How does shelf doubling on modern coins happen?

    Can anyone explain what is going on during the minting process to make this (rather cool looking) effect?

    The same as on old coins:

    Die chatter

    The simple answer, (another way of saying what Frank did) the coin bounces and hits the dies during the striking process.

    Actually, Doug, I believe it is the other way around:

    The die bounces.

    Or shifts during the strike because something has worked loose in the press.
