How does darkness affect value of a coin

I have a 1913 S type 2 Buffalo Nickel. It is very dark, so dark it is black. How does this affect the value? Is it worth less than $200? Sorry I am new to coin collecting.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Coin Talk.
I think your coins value is only what someone will give for it.

Hard to tell about the dark toning, that is not typically a desired type of toning.

I had a Type 1 quarter that was graded MS65. Aesthetically speaking I found it to be hideously ugly because of a blackish toning.... The toning itself does not detract from the coins ability to be graded. But as was stated previously, eye appeal is quite a determining factor when valuing a coin. Some look to the technical grade. Some look to the eye appeal.

Please try to post clearer pictures so we can have a better look at this buffalo nickel.

The darker toned a coin is the less desirable it becomes.

Unfortunately the type of toning that you have on your nickel is corrosion. When copper-nickel coins go bad they often turn black or brown. They can rarely have green spots. As such, you coin cannot get a straight grade.

As silver tones, black is the terminal color. You can get a "no grade" for solid black toning.

It sounds to me that you certifed coin may have been dipped and not properly rinsed before it was sent in for grading. If that's the case, the black spotting probably formed after the piece was sealed in the slab.

Without looking at it, I can't tell you if you might have a case to send it to the grading service for an adjustment. I had such a situation years ago with a PCGS coin. They took it back, dipped it and returned to me in the holder. Given its history I didn't want to keep it, so I sold and replaced it.

Your dislike of the black toning on silver is well founded. Most collectors don't care for it.

Thanks for everybody’s feedback. I am new to collecting so I greatly appreciate it. There is a very small limit on the size of the pictures I can upload, that is why they are not that great. Thanks again everyone! Glad i’m getting good answers from experts!

Click on Forum in line at top of page , Click on the forum you wish to post a new thread such as "Coin Chat", then when that forum comes up click on the blue box at top right that says " POST NEW THREAD"

Add title, information, skip the "Poll" part unless you really want that type of info, and fill in the material , and click at end to post it.
