I don't have any local coin dealers that deal in Ancients, so I don't have much interaction with others who share my interest {obsession} in coin collecting. It leaves me wondering about how others collect. How do you catalogue and display your coins? What kind of holders do you put your coins in? What web sites do you use to do your research? Do you have friends/family locally that share your interests? Well I guess my my question got a little long, but I do appreciate all who take time to answer? JonySky
Hello, Nobody I know around here to share the hobby. Like you, I feel a bit alone. Fortunately the internet changes a lot and Forums, such as this one, are a great opportunity to meet people who show interest. You can also find dealers online (i.e. Vcoins or auction houses) For the storage, minor coins in albums, and more valuable coins in Abafil cases Cucumbor
I can answer for myself and for my seven year old YN Thalia Elizabeth. A large percentage of both our collections are not worth very much per coin, so we have mostly 2x2 holders for our world coins. Thalia Elizabeth's collection is a little more organized than mine-- but then, she started later. We have three binders for her, one is US, one is Canada and one is World. The World binder will eventually have the UK / British Commonwealth split out of it since that part of her collection is growing faster than anything else. My world coins are still in the file box that I saved them in when I was a Young Numismatist. They are more or less in alphabetical order and they are all in 2x2s. As for cataloging... uh, do I have to answer that? There is a very strong club in the immediate area and several other clubs here in Western NY; and Thalia Elizabeth is the youngest member of the Junior Club here. So there is a nice community here. My dad also collects and sends Thalia goodies every so often, and some of the very nice people here have also given Thalia some very nice coins as well
Jony, In addition to world coin collecting, I collect ancient coins. Mainly Roman, but with a smattering of Macedonian, and Ptolemaic as well. I also run a forum for world and ancient if your interested. I usually get my ancient coins from www.forumancientcoins.com There's plenty to choose from, and there prices are good. They also guarantee authenticity, which is important. Be thankful you don't have a dealer who sells ancient coins around you. Most dealers, unless they specialize, and are honest charge way too much for ancients, either because they don't know what they have, of they think that something so old, has to be worth lots of $$$. I keep my ancients in 2 x 2's in a small coin album. World coins go in the binders (2x2'd), as I have hundreds of world coins, and only 15 ancients (so far...).
I have loads of lighthouse trays filled with everything from 1947 sixpences to Brandenburg 17th century gulden !
My lesser coins are displayed in the place of cheese on mouse traps. Good slabbed stuff are displayed on bear traps. Parties get interesting when the drunks try to play Indiana Jones..
For world coins I use binders with slips for 2x2´s, the binders are divided by geographical region or in some cases by country. Ancients also go into binders, but only a few per page. The other 2x2 spaces are occupied by bits of paper with drawings of the script on the coin with translation. Between the pages of 2x2´s I am in the process of placing plastic pages with single, document-sized slips with typed pages that discuss the history of the coins on each preceding 2x2 page. Not essays, just enough to make the coins come to life as it were. A lot of work but an old coin should never be passed over without learning some history.
That ties in well with the banner ad at the top of the screen now, for Numismaster. It says, "Put your money where your mouse is." heh heh.
