1 1/2 x 1 1/2 flips for nickels and lower denominations and 2 x 2 flips for quarters and up stored in pages in a binder for most of them but some are in air tites and others in tubes depending on the value. We've got circulated sets in Whitman books to keep the kids interested and then the usual sitting around here and there in transition.
2X2's rolls dansco albums (preferred for teh collections) a few whitman folders. All the above in an US Gov Wooden footlocker with an arms room padlock on it lol (overkill i know) Then again, the box is a little more than what I like to dead lift so it may be a little ok. lol
Just about anything. I have many Whitman Albums, plastic rolls, 2x2 cardboard flips, 2x2 plastic flips, glass jars and just about anything that will hold them.
danscos for type sets and collections (mercs, bufs, etc) airtights for single coins (world gold, high grade one offs that cought my eye) Slabs (NGC, PCGS, ANACS, etc) for the high priced stuff...
I'm new to this hobby, are flips those paper holders with the thin plastic stuff over the coin, and if so where do you guys prefer to purchase them? Also. Will those allow scratches on proof type coins? thx. Tom
You are referring to the 2X2 holders. I wouldn't put a proof coin in one. If the coin is valuable and you would like to preserve the condition, airtites work pretty well. I buy about half of my supplies from the local coin dealer and half from jpscorner.com
i put anything i have alot of into those plastic clear tubes. i usually put about a rolls worth of coins in each one. i also put the loose coins into baggies and fold them up. i have lots of 2x2's and those blue whitman folders for some of the older coins. i keep it all in a sentry fireproof safe with silica gel packets in there to keep the moisture out. i put the safe in my closet so no one sees it and steals it. that would just make me cry if someone broke in and stole my collection and rolled it all up and took it to the bank.
2x2's placed in PVC free pages. I keep them out of direct sunlight and away from moisture. The more expensive/higher grade coins are kept in Dansco's. I have very few of the Whitman folders. The ones I have are used mainly for low grade coins.
Top value coins go in air-tites, dansco albums for type sets, coin tubes for roll sets and 2x2 for all extra. I only use dansco albums it is the only album that I like.
CoinEdge holders for my uncirculated Mercury dime, Roosevelt dime, Jefferson nickels, 2-cent pieces and nickel 3-cent piece collections. Dansco albums for my circulated sets (liberty nickels, half dimes, bust dimes, seated liberty dimes, Barber dimes, and Walking Liberty halves) 2x2s in PVC free pages for my Lincoln Cents Slabs in a slab holder kept in my safe Unslabbed gold coins in Air-Tite holders Various plastic tubes of silver coins and IH cents Mint rolls (e.g., state quarters, halves, dollars) stored in airtight containers with dessicants Proof sets in cardboard proof set boxes
Yes that is what a 2x2 flip is. I keep Proofs, Uncirc's, etc in them and if placed properly and secured they will last for a long, long time and will not scratch a coin. I've had some coins in them for about 40 or more years. They come in sizes for most coins. You can pretty much seal them shut with a stapler but I would suggest you flatten the stapples with a pair of pliers to stop them from sticking together. There are lots of coin supply web sites that sell the 2x2's in all types of quantities. If you go to most coins shows they usually have them there also. Local coin dealers sell them but the prices are usually high. I've found that at coin shows the 2x2's are the cheapest around, no sales tax, no S & H either. As to the constant panic about PVC, remember it's melting point is 212 C or 413.6F which means PVC effects on coins is basically an old wives tale.
I've suspected this for a long time and haven't [fortunately] has any problems with some old holders with PVC in them that I just never got around to changing but also refused to admit that I still use. But I didn't want to say it out loud for fear of sounding ignorant. It will be interesting to see if any other people express opinions or relate experiences.
PVC... I was around back in the late 70's-early 80's when a company made some really nice looking albums. They ended up turning all of the silver coins the prettiest color of green slime you have ever seen. If left alone the pretty green slime would (DID) damage the coin. Am I sure of this.. Well, lets say that I have had to replace BU Franklin, Walker, Mercury, Jefferson (not silver but damaged) and Peace set because of it. PVC does no damage? The PVC doesnt have to melt to damage the coins. Dont believe me.. Take a BU 1928 Peace dollar, store it in a known PVC holder for about 15 years. This is not an old "wives tale" this is fact. Been there, seen it.
I keep all my good stuff in a box locked with a padlock which is locked inside my sentry fire safe and put in my closet
Just wait until you own some PVC-damaged coins and you'll believe it then. And kick yourself. HARD. Yes, I own coins with PVC damage. Fish
The PVC degasses, but also reacts to metals it comes in contact with. From what i have seen direct contact seems to realy cause a lot of problems. Try this: get a common date silver dime (something you can pick up for melt) and an old penny (pre 1982 especially) and put them in a soft flip, set it aside. come back in 3 months and take a look at it. it will scare the begesus out of you how fast the reaction can occur. This might be a good test for a "time lapse" image set... I had some coins i purchased in a dealers junk box that i put in soft flips and forgot about, now they are ruined. I am out abut $0.50.... Others can probably give horror stories of loosing lots of $$$ to PVC.
PVC coin flips damaging coins is no myth, it's quite well documented. It's not the plastic itself that is harmful, rather it is the softening agent used to keep the plastic soft and pliable that is the culprit. That's one of the reasons it is illegal to use PCV in food container products like baggies and zip-locks.
i recently bought a safe from ebay and i havent put shelves in there yet so that are in footlockers in the safe. chris
