How do you report a thread (to the mods) in the "For Sale" section which you believe to be fraudulent? I don't see a "report it" button anywhere.
I am sure I know exactly which item you are talking about, but I don't know how to report it either..
It's there, just like it is in any post. It's that little trinagle in bottom right corner with the ! in the center. That said, the mods will not get involved nor will they try to police the offerings made in the Advertising section. Coin Talk plays no part in that whatsoever. Everything is Buyer Beware !
Thank you for the instruction & buyer beware comment. It's too bad we can't keep scammers out of the new CT sales & trades forums. I'm curious & haven't read any rules but if someone burns a CT member, will they get banned from CT?
Is that the for sale item in which the seller states that they're "scared to death to send it anywhere"? But they'll send it to you.......
It's too bad you can't keep scammers out of anywhere - everywhere. But you can't. What you are asking is for CT to take responsibility for the actions of others. We aren't about to do that - we can't do that. In the first place how can we guarantee that every ad posted is on the up and up ? We don't have the coins to examine. And you cannot state definitively that any coin is or is not genuine based on pictures and written descriptions. Nor can we police what happens between 2 members who make an agreement between themselves. Nor should we. Nope. There are no rules regarding this, nor will there be. CT merely makes a place available for you the membership to buy, sell and trade - IF you wish to do so. But any and all risks are yours and yours alone. And we will not become involved in any way in any disputes between you guys. You are 100% on your own ! Like I said, Buyer Beware ! And Seller and Trader Beware too !
Just like eBay... but of course they have the self appointed overseers of all "coins bad", the infamous CFe group.
How about feedback...any plans for feedback? I suppose that would be redundant...we can always slam them in the Forum. :3three:
Hardly like ebay - Coin Talk doesn't get paid, ebay does. But let me ask you a question. Suppose you go to a coin show and while at that show you buy a coin from a dealer. That coin turns out to be fake. Now, who are you going to turn to when you want your money back ? Are you going to go after the coin club or the promoter who put the coin show on ? Or the dealer you bought the coin from ? And who's fault is it that YOU bought a counterfeit ? The coin club's ? Thinking like that is just people trying to avoid responsibility for their own actions. You see, the coin club, or the promoter, the guys who put the coin show on and provided the venue - are just that, the providers of the venue and nothing else. Well, Coin Talk is the provider of the venue, CT is providing you a service, and a free service at that. And just like the coin club or the show promoter they take no responsibility for a purchase that you the buyer make with a dealer between yourselves.
Now that's quite an overstatement. I completely agree that you can't definitively state that a coin is genuine without seeing it in hand, but do you really believe that when I saw a coin advertised on EBay as a Meiji 1 (1868) Japanese "Trade Dollar" I couldn't definitely state that it is a fake, even though the first Japanese milled coins weren't issued until 1870, the first Japanese Trade Dollars weren't issued until 1875, and the one advertised had the reverse of the ¥1 coin first issued in 174?
You're right Roy, there are times when you can say with certainty that a given coin is a fake based only on a picture. But there's a whole lot more times when you can't.
I completely understand that coin talk wants to stay out of the transactions of its members. I have no problem with that whatsoever. However, just like we have MODs who make judgment calls and “police” the forums there would be nothing wrong with someone doing that. We have plenty of experienced collectors and dealers on this forum; I would even go so far as saying we have experts on certain series. We know when we see something sketchy, and there is no problem with a mod removing it or sending the poster a PM. I am not advocating that coin talk take responsibility for the actual transactions or any outcome from such transactions. It’s not like this is a big issue there is only 1 add we are talking about and I don’t see it becoming an epidemic in the future.
No one likes to see obvious or even suspicious ads listed, but CT should not get involved. In fact, their option should be to simply eliminate this feature all together. Anyone sticking their neck out, on behalf of others, is just facing lots of legal problems. Leave it to just comments in the forum and we are all better off.
The few CT folks I've met in person are people of high character with whom I have no hesitation doing business. I'm sure most CT folks are cut from the same cloth. My concern is that CT is an open forum and it's easy for ill-intended individuals to figure out what people have, where they store it, and where they live...especially after mailing coins and money back and forth. Perhaps that hasn't been a problem, but I wouldn't be surprised (God forbid!) to hear of a CT home invasion. Of course, I've bought quite a bit from eBay Sellers that use their home address as their return address and nothing seems to have happen to them...but I wouldn't do it!
