How do you grade proof coins through scuffed up government holders?

Do you guys open your proof sets to grade them? If so, what do you use for a cloth to set your coins on when you are inspecting them?

Looking at them closely from various angles usually give a good idea of what is on the coin and what is on the plastic. Having a loupe with built in LED light helps.

crack em out sand and erase them and put em in a rock tumbler like others have suggested
they will stand out from other proof coins

I do cheat. I use a stereo microscope. It's as plain as your nose on your face to what's on the coin verses what's on the holder. The focus is completely different because of the depth of field.

No need to crack them out to grade them. Use a loupe or if its hard plastic thats scratched up there are stuff out there to polish them out.
