I stopped at a neighbors house today an noticed a 5 gallon glass water bottle on the floor filled about 2/3 with coins. I asked what plans he had for the coins and he said he had not thought that far ahead. I know he has kids and grand kids and I'm sure that that's where they'll go when he gets rid of them. I'm also sure that no one in his family is a collector. If he gives the coins to the kids, they'll just spend them or take them to the bank for REAL money. I told him I was a collector and would LOVE to have them if he ever decides to part with them. So what do I do? I mean I know when he's gone... I could always... *sigh* no, I couldn't. But I NEED them. So it's cakes and pies for the next few months. Maybe ask for a few just to see what could be in there. Any other ideas? Wax his cars? Mow his lawn? Paint his house? I have a foot in the door because I've fixed his PC and printer several times and asked for nothing in return. I was the Systems Team Leader at the Dallas Coca-Cola branch for 15 years so I know computers. Maybe I can trade him some Coca-Cola collectibles for the coins. What do you think? Have you ever tried to buy a hoard of coins from an 80 year old friend? It'll keep me busy for months! WHAT DO I DO?!? Thanks, Ben
Don't press the issue. That would be a sure way of alienating yourself from him. If and when the time comes that he would like to get rid of the change, he would likely take it somewhere else if you keep bugging him. Chris
Stop obsessing. You let him know you're interested, so there's nothing more for you to do. All you should do at this point is forget about it, and if he decides you should get them, you will (either by purchase or gift).
Okay. I'll just be me. The cool thing was that we were taking a cake him and his wife for just be good neighbors. I'll just cross my fingers and hope he thinks of me when he's ready to get rid of it. One other thing that could happen, as he keeps adding coins, the glass may not be able to take the stress. If it breaks, I'd be glad to help clean things up. He even said he was worried that the glass would crack. So I'll stop obsessing and wave every time I see him. If he needs help with something, I'll be there, but no more talk about the coins. Time will tell and maybe, just maybe I'll get a shot at them. The cool thing IS he's a gift kind of guy. Breath in... and out... in... and out. Okay, I'm calm now. I'll keep my mind off the coins. Thanks for the suggestions! Ben
Don't worry about the water bottle breaking. They're pretty darn strong unless it has been previously damaged. Chris
If you think he would really trust you, offer to check them for him for half of the keepers up to a certain amount and pay 5x face for any keepers over that, that he doesn't want. I have done this before, my certain amount was $5. My friend just looked at the remaining keepers and said to just replace it. You may find like me, my curiosity was satisfied after about 500 coins
My problem is I know that coin 502 would be a 1969 DDO... if not 502, then 1502, or 22,002... I wouldn't stop. That BIG coin is just 4 or 5 coins away... from the bottom. Ben
Like others have said, youve let him know your definatly interested, if hes in the market to part with them he's knows he's got atlesat you lined up.
