I understand most have albums or things like that, but for those who have been collecting 10+ years, how do you package your coins? I'm not asking if you store in a safe or safety deposit box, but how do you organize them? Tubes, 2x2s, etc? The reason I ask this is that I have some roosevelt dimes that I have broken out by year and mint, but every time I need to find one to sell/trade I'm searching through tubes marked by a number then have to cross reference a spreadsheet and it is a pain in the... Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. I guess I could put them all in 2x2s and boxes but then the space becomes an issue as I have limited space. Thanks!
I don't use tubes for mine. I have only 1 album, UNC State 1/4s in a Littleton album. The rest are in 2x2s kept in binders, organized by denomination.
I put my dimes, nickles, cents, and quarters 2X2's and store them in 20 pocket BCW pages. It takes a little work and time but I believe it is well worth it.
You can order 50 ct. packages of flips in the red 2x2 box. Each box can hold about 2-3 rolls of dimes. I believe they also come with the 1-3/4 x 1-3/4 inserts to record data. Cardboard 2x2's that are stapled take up a lot more space regardless of whether you're putting them in these boxes or storing them in 20 ct. pages in 3-ring binders. The flips are the most space-efficient method. You can store roughly 1000 dimes in the same space as a 2" binder that can hold 300-400 coins. Another thing you can do is make your own dividers to separate them by date/mintmark, decade or whatever depending on the quantity of each. The best thing to use (don't laugh!) is an empty cereal box. Simply cut rectangles 2"x2-1/2", make a 1/2" crease on the long side so you can fold this down above the flips and write the dates on the tabs of the inner side. The other advantage of this method is that if you remove one coin, you don't have to rearrange the other coins (i.e. move the others forward) like you would with the plastic pages. Chris
For a majority of my art bars in my silver art bar collection, I have several ways. I use Dansco albums (# 7085 and # 7086), airtites that are specifically for 1-oz silver bars, and plastic flaps. Which method I use will depend on that particular silver art bar.
For stuff I'm not too concerned about (lots of wheaties), baby food jars. For stuff that I care about, flips in binders. You can get flips cheap on ebay if you look.
