I have just upgraded my 1793 Wreath to AU58. We think it'ss one of the first struck due to its extremely high relief - the dies wore with time. The trouble is that the relief is so high and the contrast so stark that the reflections prevent a good photograph or scan. Any ideas? I tried a nice scanner & it looked like a ball of brown light, adjusting the picture does not work either. Thanks - smb12321
I have found that if using a scanner, holding the coin at slight angles will give you better results.
I need to find something that will do that - hold the coin at a slight angle that is. In a recent post, GD metioned that using a piece of glass that would hold the coin at an angle would capture toning better - which makes sense, as the light would bounce back at an angle instead of straight back. I haven't been able to come up with anything that would do that without causing other light glare issues.
