How did you start collecting?

I grew up in the 60s, back then a nickel actually bought stuff like a pack of gum or a candy bar.

I always threw my change into a jar. This was a habit I adapted from my Dad. After a while I'd sort the jar. Pennies and Nickels, I'd save, dimes and quarters were real money, so I'd roll those, and cash them in.

I'd then sort the pennies into wheats and memorials. And the nickels into pre-60s and 60s.

Now, collecting nickels, I'm amazed at how many nickels slipped through my fingers! Especially had I known about DDOs, DDRs, and RPMs!

I was also a child of the 60's (born in 1960).

My interest in coin collecting began when my relatives started giving me coins, and my Mother gave me the coins that my Father had saved.

I remember getting a nickel with a big "P" on the back.
I thought it was the neatest thing I'd ever seen.

Since then, my interest has stedily grown.

By the way welcome to Cointalk.

I too grew up in the 60's an 70's (Born in 62, Athol, MA don't know if you heard of it! It's in Worchester County.) my big brother collected coins and would give me no date Indian Head nickels or other strange coins. I actually started collecting Lincolns and would search bank rolls back then you know you could find quite a few wheaties. Well I likes Inian Head pennies as well and started spending my paper route savings on those but nothing nice just fillers. I remember in 72 my brother telling everyone in the family to search there change for the DDO cent.
Well I dabbled in collecting all sorts of coins but actully started on Jefferson nickels in the mid 80's trying for full step examples and have strayed into variety collecting and collect almost exclusively Jefferson nickels.
