How did this Morgan earn a 65? What are folks thinking over at NGC?

"...because the coins are not in NGC holders, NGC cannot guarantee the grades it applies to these GSA dollars."

If i bought this particular coin unseen based on their "opinion" i would be really P*&^%$ off!
THIS COIN is why you never buy the holder.

Those pics/scans make the hits appear pretty dark, which makes them really stand out. My guess is, in hand, they aren't as severe (especially the hit on the Eagle's breast). I'd call it a 64, but I don't think 65 is too much of a stretch, considering it's a CC in a GSA holder.

You buy the coin, not the holder. Alot of times when you see a coin, a Morgan Dollar for example, in MS-65 certified by any TPG, it can look either over graded, or under graded. The people at PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc are humans like us too, sure they might be experts, but anyone can make mistakes.

I agree. Its an extreme stretch of the imagination grading that as an MS65. With those serious hits its an MS63 at best with that deep pit on the Eagle's Breast being the clincher.

Musta been graded on Peyote Day.

Nice cracks and clashes on that coin. Shame about the hit on the chest. I agree, solid 64.

Could that be a strike through on the breast? If so, it is an error and would not downgrade the coin as much as post mint damage.

NGC graded GSA coins aren't exactly the pinnacle of conservative grading.

I think the obverse is really nice but that hit on the breast is deep, and distracting. ms63 imho.

It sold for $345 far short of the 463 numismedia lists for 1883 cc in 65, but still more than 64 money.

I would be willing to bet that coin would not holder if cracked out due to that deep hit on the rev.

The coin is damaged, period. In years past it would have been a no grade any day of the week.

First I don't think it's much of a stretch for that coin to make 65 but I do agree with others who say 64. The coin is very clean for a CC and if that hit wouldn't be there the coin would have claims to MS66. Yes it's a large hit and yes it's in a price focal area which for me drops an other wise 65+ coins to a 64...don't see how it could go to a 63 becuase of that one mark. To say the coin should be no graded becuase it's damaged is laughable.....there are tens of thousands of coins in PCGS/NGC holders that have contact marks of that size and it's not like someone hit it with a hammer. Another Morgan came along and wacked it pretty good but that's not out of the norm for heavy Morgans so why would it be considered damage anymore the reed marks and other dings on a Morgan?

I see what looks like bezel damage and a deep slash across the breast of the eagle. The top 2 TPG's have lost it. You have to look at the coin with your own eyes and not trust them anymore. No more buying sight unseen from those losers.

Yeah and there are tens of thousands of them that were put in body-bags in years past. Perhaps you should read up on what consitutes damage.

That is not damage from being placed in a bezel. Gsa holders have small black "nubs" that hug over the rim in a couple spots.

Yes I am sure you are right and not just stating a rediculous opinion as usual so how about showing me some proof that Morgan dollars with marks like this were bagged years ago? I know what damage is and coins clash together which forms bag marks...this has always been the case and always will so technically any mark on a coin could be considered damage so why should this hit on the eagles chest be any different?

Yeah I know, because I don't save pictures of coins from 8-10 years ago to prove it then I must be lying, exagerating, or just spouting off my rediculous opinions

Anyone who has any kind of memory at all and who has frequented the various forums for the past 10 or 12 years has seen countless examples of coins like this that were body-bagged. Now I really don't care if you believe it or not. That's the nice thing about the truth, it's always the truth, whether people believe it or not.

And you're right, coins do bang together and that makes bag marks. But it also doesn't matter what causes the damage. Damage is a matter of degree, regardless of what causes it. If the mark is bad enough, severe enough, then it's damage. Plain and simple.

And that mark is definitely severe enough. I suppose you think that toned Franlin posted the other day wasn't damaged either.

The TPGs have gotten fat and lazy in recent years. They routinely over-grade coins. And coins that they would never have slabbed at all in years past, that should not be slabbed today, are being today. Precisely because people like you are willing accept it.

This coin prime example of both those things. And rather obviously, I am not the only one who thinks so.

Um, when were the GSA coins like this one graded? I thought it was quite some time ago.
