How did this happen to me..

When I was around 6 or 7 my uncle tuffy (who has collected coins for years and is an expert on coins) bought me a DMPL morgan. It had nice contrast with the fields and the bust of the liberty was white in contrast to the dark background

since then the coin has tarnished so much that, it has lost all of its DMPL.
    It still has its luster.

people on other forums were harassing me on this saying its just simply NOT POSSIBLE for this to happen. Well I know they are wrong and I remember what the coin looked like, and it was indeed a nice DMPL morgan.

Since then I think the PVC flip I put it in ruined the coin. And I also put it in a paper envolope for a while and this developed an ugly brown toning around the coin.

I just wrote my uncle tuffy an email on this.

    Post photos...
I don't know if it could take away the DMPL either...it seems like the coin would have PVC on it but I have never heard of a coin losing a DMPL because it sat in a flip....

Speedy, thank you. I will lost a picture of the coin later today when I get back from school.

It still has alot of luster but has lost all of its cameo affect.

Which is the highest quality CIRCULATION minted coin you can get. It is not a proof, but to the untrained eye could be passed off as one.

I don't know how people can claim this isn't possible - when there are thousands of possible chemical compositions to envelopes out there, many which could adversly effect the surface of a silver coin. I will grant that I don't know much about DMPL conditions, but with an acidic paper envelope, I would imagine that the coin could possibly atrophy in thousands of possible ways... including the ability to reflect light to a certain standard. Going from a PVC environment which will coat the coin in one chemical, to an evelope of unknown composition, which would coat the coin in a different chemical... I would say the possibilities would be endless.

Like Speedy said, post an image of the coin. It might help people to give you better thoughts and opinions.

Rick...I would think for the DMPL to "go away" would be like saying a fingerprint just....went away off the coin one day....there is more to it than that IMO.

From the tone of your post, it seems like you're no longer happy with the coin. But, it's still the same coin your uncle gave you, right? That makes its sentimental value priceless, regardless of its condition.

When I was around 7 years old, a lady friend of my mother's whom I loved dearly gave me a common date Morgan Dollar that she'd picked up in Las Vegas. On the reverse of the coin was a little, black star-shaped decal which, in my 7-year-old naive way, I promptly took a knife to in order to remove. Most of the decal remains to this day along with several obvious knife marks. But, it's one of the most valuable conis in my collection (sentimentally speaking) and I'll never part with it. The lady friend passed away many years ago and I still remember her when I look at the coin.

So, no matter what your Morgan Dollar looks like, hold onto it forever. You'll think of your uncle every time you look at it. That's where the real treasure of coin collecting comes from...

I will post the image of the coin. Take my word for it, it was DMPL and my uncle knows what he is talking about. I will probably not post another thread on this forum, as I have stopped posting on the CU forum due to constant people flaming me, and many of those people are in THIS FORUM. I respect all the nice respones I have gotten though. And I do have one question: My library and local bookstore do not have any books on numismatics. (Barnes and noble). I will order from amazon. Whats a good numismatic book on english and spainish gold coins? Thank you

Please understand the image is not that good, I have trouble taking pictures.

NOTE: I CAN ONLY POST THE BAD PICTURE NOW. THE OTHER PICTURE IS TOO LARGE AND I DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT SOFTWARE TO CHANGE ITS SIZE.

Would you mind sending him My address? I'll give it to you in a PM. And ask him what I won?

    thanks

this makes me sick. i was a member there for over a year too.
and I spent hours and hours (6 hours or more a day) just browsing that forum and getting information

    :sigh:

It appears that the flip and paper drew in some moisture and grew a hazy type mold on the coin! It appears and I believe that the DMPL surface still exists under the hazy mold and it is possible that the hazy mold could be removed professionally. I am sure that someone here on the forum will know of some of the Coin Restoration Services if you would want to try to have the coin restored.

    Good luck!

That's a good reason. Should I dip it in jewel luster would that work and do the job?

With all due respect, if you were banned, then I have to assume that you were doing some arguing also.

Now on to the coin. I read a great description of the scientific issues in the reflective properties of a mint condition coin. Based on that, it is possible for a coin to deteriorate as you describe. If the toning/tarnish builds up, it blocks the reflective properties and the coin will no longer reflect light in the same way.

As for dipping it yourself, DON'T. Either learn to live with it as is, or send it to a professional.

    ABSOLUTELY NOT !!

And you should really stop handling it the way you are. Holding the coin in your bare hand like that to take a pic won't do it any good either.

If you wish to have the coin conserved, send it to NCS CLICK HERE But do nto attempt to do ANYTHING to the coin yourself.

I agree with huntsman, what was there - is still there. It may not be as nice as it was once for if it does have or did have PCV on it - the coin could be damaged permanently. But it may not be. You won't know until the work is done.
