I know nothing about ancients, but was intrigued by this lot, particularly the reverse of the coin on the left. 'Cheap' money, so I figured "why not?". Any information about the coins (genuine?; general info; value; etc...) would be appreciated. Thanks. *Just realized I'm missing one of the reverses in the pic, so not sure how they line up with the obverses, but now thinking the reverse that I like corresponds with the 2nd coin on the top row. Still waiting to receive the coins.
Looks like a lot of 4th century Roman's you have there. All common but in great shape. Good job. Edit This should get you started http://www.tesorillo.com/aes/_rev/index1i.htm
The Constantine with the single standard between soldiers is probably your least common, all are commom though. Depends on how much the lot cost you.
Garlicus (great handle )-- those are very respectable examples of late Roman bronzes. Without knowing what you paid we can't determine if you acquired them for a reasonable price. Nothing wrong with the coins though! They're probably far better "first ancient coins" than most of us bought .
The single standard is Constantius II and is as common as LRB's can be with a rating of c3. There is one, though, that is rated as an r5, meaning only one example noted in RIC. However, that type of rarity really only appeals to a specialist, as the GE reverses are a common type. The CONSTANTINOPOLIS is a bit scarcer with the reverse field mark it has.
$45 for the 6 coins. I figured it was worth a shot at $7.50/coin. Thank you, everyone, for the info and references.
You have three different members of the dynasty and the Commemorative but the mintmarks I can read are all the same city but all four are different in details (dots, etc.). I'm not a proponent of beginners getting too enamored with minor details and catalog numbers until they are ready to understand why they may or may not want to study these coins in depth as opposed to a thousand other ways of collecting ancients. These are so common that I once did a page for use by school students working with uncleaned coins. Yours are what I called types 2 and 5: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/uncleaned.html The only reason I might question the price is whether you might have rather had more variation (fewer soldier reverses, more different mints). They are definitely worth the price. I hope your next purchase is as nice.
Garlicus => I admit that your handle is quite good, but man => I love your avatar!! I like your coin-style and I like your sweet OP-additions Hey, I hope that you have a fantastic Canadian Thanksgiving long-weekend!!
Thank you. I hope you enjoy the weekend, as well. Unfortunately, I don't even get to enjoy the American holidays (except our Thanksgiving and Christmas) as I work Sunday - Thursday (and a couple hours on Friday), even if it's a holiday, BUT I get a "comp day" though, to use when I choose
I also think you did exceptionally well for the overall type and grade---and far better than I did when I started with uncleaned coins and ended up with mostly very low grade Constantinian dynasty types that were barely identifiable.
