We have this current coin in circulation that's probably becoming fewer and fewer to date. A few years back, rumors have been spreading about our 10 peso coin containing gold. I dont have idea if it's true, but I've met a few who owns a ring that's been made by that coin. Now, I've been searching stuff and came out with these: http://aimee.philwind.com/archives/1739 http://philmoney.blogspot.com/2008/04/gold-in-10-peso-coin.html And geeez, found one selling x50 and x100 its worth: http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/classifieds+directory/q/ten+peso+year+2000+coin This may be true or not. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the inner disc of the coin is made of an aluminum-bronze alloy (92% copper, 6% aluminum, 2% nickel). Yet, people really dont care much about that. 'til now, year 2000 coins have been hammered and turned into rings since they have this gold-like features which is appealing. Is it possible that this year 2000-2001 coin soon will be rare?
Considering how many were made and how few people will believe this silly rumor, these coins will likely remain fairly easy to find for a long time to come. The reason why certain coins become what some define as "rare": Market, market, market.
I see. Not that I'm pushing it, but I have this feeling that this coin will be sought out in the future (I mean for us Filipino Numismatists). 'been more or less 3 years now when the "crazed" happened. And there's this seller i posted as proof. Imagine selling it for 100 times it's original value. She's nuts. I have to look for some now. But I wont go with the price she's selling.
Someone can list anything for any price they want, but it doesn't mean anyone's buying. =) I wouldn't know about what goes on in your country, but here these coins are common, 3 years after the craze you mentioned. Your post was the first time I personally have ever heard of this rumor.
Yep. i'm probably just castle-building here. But can't blame me for putting this up. sought-after coins imo are usually shaped these ways. I dunno, I may be wrong. Im still literally a noob. I hope some experienced Filipino numismatist are in this forum. They would sure know what's going on. I mean culturally speaking. Coz people here may be dumb enough to think that there's gold in that coin. Or they may have known that there's no gold in it. Yet still, up to now, rings forged out of that coin are being made. That "craze" sir i've mentioned is still alive. Well, the thing is, it would be nice to have a desired coin based on this "craze". A funny history of how it turned out to be a rare coin in the future, right?
Yea, I guess if enough people start hoarding and destroying them the number out there can drop low enough to become scarce. Do most people in the Philippines not have access to gold testing materials? Like here you can just walk into one of many jewelry stores and find out if somethng is gold or just looks like it.
I see it as backfiring if you are hoping it will make the coins rare. Common coins go into circulation, wear down, and get turned in, lost, etc. A rumor like this may result in a few being made into rings, but I would say many more of these will be pulled from circulation and saved as a result of the rumors. I liken it to no cent nickels made in the US in 1883. A few got gold plated, but then the public heard this nickels were rare. As a result even though like 8 times as many 1883's were made with the word cents, the no cents coin is much cheaper today. Chris
