scene 1 act 1: American silver hunter buys box of halves. Opens halves. Tosses everything not silver into a bucket. Returns passed on to bank. Receives payment. Repeats. The one Canadian bank teller I ask about 50 cent pieces looks at me like I’m speaking gibberish. I have one non silver American half dollar. I want more but I want to discover these halves fated to be in my collection, coin roll hunting myself. How do I get rolls from an American bank at face? Do I have to cross the border? This route ain’t realistic for me, no passport and no ride to make the journey. I’ve tried Googling it but, to no avail. Does anyone know how I can collect Americans here from the comfort of my Canadian home without purchasing each coin for my set at a dealer or online, which of course would be expensive!? Although, all MS would be nice, these coins are meant for the “general” collection of having one of everything type. Your expertise and experience here would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Peace!
I suggest you start a WTB thread and list out what you want. You’d likely have to pay a small premium and shipping, but would get the coins you are looking for. Several people here go through boxes and boxes of them. You could also reach out to them personally. Look at the final few pages of this thread to see who is still doing lots of boxes. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roll-searchers-post-your-results.10176/page-2041#post-3414044
I think the problem is you want them at face value. There aren't going to be too many people willing to get them for you and send them to you for nothing. Maybe if you could find an American who wants to collect Canadian coins, you could work out a swap?
Having visited different antique and specialty shops while visiting in Canada, I know they have all kinds of random US coinage. If they have them up in Wierton (where I found them), they should have them everywhere.
If you really want to buy these at face, then I see a trip to the USA in your future... Or take the advice of John in post #4.
As others have stated, it all depends upon how many and how much you want to pay. If you travel to the US to get them at face value at a bank/credit union, then I would add the total cost of travel to the basis cost of those coins. Unless of course you do other things while in the US. I can still get rolls of halves from my credit union. There's been no silver in them. Other ppl have to order them. Others banks stopped taking orders. I was told by another bank person to always ask for customer stuff brought in during the fall holidays as that is when people apparently flush out their old coin jars for the cash, for a higher probability of silver coinage.
finding some one to trade with sounds like your be best bet , but u have to realize that better than half are NIFC, s so face value is unrealistic lots of US collectors love Canadian cionage !
Have you tried a local currency exchange? I’m not sure what they would have in coinage, but I imagine that they receive them from people returning.
Buy a pair of these: Then buy a round trip ticket for a ride on one of these: You only need to go as far across the border as the nearest large bank - probably cheaper than postage or freight - the tough part will be explaining yourself to customs and immigration on the way back
There's a bunch of CT threads but CRH'ers were starting to have issues in returning bulk halves to the bank, or any bank. Much less ordering them.
Yup, this sort of transaction is on my mind, however, I’m not looking (not yet anyway) for the 20$ and up coin, NIFC’s, Slabs, MS, etc. Currently, I’m just Looking for circulated, decent looking half dollars worth, well, 50 cents. As a new collector, I want, ideally, in my “general” circulated collection, one of everything, this would include every denomination. Right now, half dollars are what I have least of and, they seem to hold up well to age unlike some other coin.
I like JFK’s hairstyle on my 1989 D. He looks like me, rockstar! I wonder if the car he got shot in is in some museum somewhere? Where were you when he was murdered, do you remember? How many asassinated presidents are on yer coins down there in America? Oh yeah, I had to reread your reply just to make sure I replied appropriately instead of just skimming your words and not actually reading. “This route ain’t realistic for me, no passport...” The purchase of a ticket, some beautiful luggage and a passport after applying for a pardon is probably ten times the amount of shipping one roll of halves to me, but thanks for your time and effort.
I don't know how you are going to get someone to give you halves for face value. For instance I can get a bunch of them, but then think of my time involved in it to obtain them or even just to package them up, then the additional cost to mail them. You'll more than likely have to find someone to swap with canadian coins with to try and avoid some sort of premium. The car you ask about is apparently at the Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan. https://www.thehenryford.org/collections-and-research/digital-resources/popular-topics/kennedy-limo/
some Americans collect Canada coins. I myself have a hard time finding low grade readable date Canada five cent silvers. Perhaps the ones I want were all melted. If you find a trader he will gladly supply what you want in trade for what they want. Also popular are Canada quarters. In silver the most popular are halfs and dollars. good luck.
Put an ad in your local trader paper and offer to exchange canadian paper for their unwanted Canada coins. Just before the cent was discontinued I traded $65 in Canada paper for $65 in Canada cents.
How much is one roll of halves cost at the bank? What would be the shipping cost of an unopened roll of halves to Canada? How much would packaging cost? What would someone’s time, someone who is already hunting 500$ worth, be worth? Premium? How much time would it take? An hour at most? How much is an American hour worth, minimum wage or executive presidential wages? No one asked for anything for free. Now, if I asked someone to go through their reject buckets and build me a complete set, that would be an entirely different situation, I haven’t and won’t, what fun would that be... zip, zero nadda. What I was asking, is it possible for me to call your bank or Brinks or some other already recognized institution that one of you might already be aware of, other than the mint, to have them deliver rolls of American to Canada. Maybe I should have asked if anyone in America has had Canadian coin delivered to them from our banks.
