Ancient coin from let's say 400 BC, have BC on it???? This was brought up in a conversation between myself and another collector, just curious... I'm just trying to find out, how a coin that old, Before christ, have BC on it, does it mean something else?

Well any coin bearing the letters BC cannot have them for the reason before Christ. Now my knowledge of ancients is very limited, but any such letters would probably be the mint mark, or the privy mark.

I might suspect that what you are asking about is not even a coin, let alone an ancient coin. I once read a similiar question elsewhere - if memory serves it was a modern reproduction sold to tourist.

Of course it could be there is such an ancient coin with the letters B & C in the legends. But it certainly would have nothing to do with the date.

That's what my guess was.... Is that the coin the guy has is a counterfeit of some sorts.... I found out that he has been buying from places like The NCM, and spending quite a bit of money at these rip-offs.... I've put a stop to that now though, another case of not studying before ya buy a coin... Oh well, he's on the right track now :D

SC, yes (with consultation of the senate, found on a number of Roman bronze). BC, I think not.

You maybe have heard of the Thessalian League? It comprised of a group of city states in the thessalian valley in Northern Greece which combined to issues joint coinage.

Well you can rest assured that your BC coin was not issued by the Thessalian league, so you don't have to go researching anything about the finest cavalry greece had ever known, or the inter city state rivalries that blew the Thessalian league apart.

Your coin was issued by another and quite different league. Quite possibly from the same region, but I doubt it. It was produced by / for `The Honourable Leaugue of Psychics and Necromancers' who decided to leave evidence of their predictions on coinage so that someone many years later could hold aloft such coin and say `see? 400 years before this guy was born, we made this coin as evidence of our ability to predict the exact year he would be born.' Unfortunately that coin has been lost for slightly over 2,000 years! I hear background voices saying `not out fault it got lost for so long', but the crystal ball is misting over again and I can tell you no more........
