I was wondering what kind of sales everyone has been having over the past few weeks on ebay? Are they stronger than normal? Are prices you are getting stronger than normal? I was just wondering if the Christmas shopping season is a plus for coin sales or if Christmas creates weakness because people needing money for gifts. For me it seems like it has been a little weaker than normal over the past few weeks and prices are off about 5% to 7%. Personally, I was expecting better prices and stronger sales than normal as we approach Christmas, but so far it isn't happening with me. Would love to hear what others have been experiencing with their ebay coin sales over the past few weeks.
I'm with ya, Chris. I haven't been selling recently, but I will soon. I'll post up for you when I do. In the meantime, I'm like Chris. Any news ? Venues other than e-bay ?
I usually run auctions where they close no later than about 10 days before Christmas. Usually sales are fine during this time. However, this year I've noticed a sizable weakness in prices and it has been getting worse the past couple of weeks. People just don't seem to be buying right now.
ebay just select the good sellers. it is just like outside that you have to select the stores that you like.
I am taking a loss on my mint sets and proof sets. Prices are not going as high as they had been the last few months. Because of this, I am holding back on a lot of my coins and sets and will wait until after the new year. Many people just don't have the extra cash to spend on coins after they buy presents. But I figure that since many people will get cash for christmas, things should pick up right after the holidays.
Ebay Gifts It seems to be that Christmas shopping season means a boost for the gift-type coins on ebay, and sagging prices for the others. By gift-type coins, I mean the kind of things grandparents are getting for kids, etc. State Quarter sets, Proof/Mint sets (new), etc, Commemoratives, Eagles. First Spouse coins have seen a bit of a bump lately, first time in awhile they've had a little bounce-back. I just sold a PCGS PF69 Martha Washington for $541. Only 2 weeks ago they couldn't crack $450. At the same time, I've been finding Franklins, Jeffersons, etc., selling below their recent market prices.
I am not sure how to answer this. I just sold 16 slab - mostly MS-66 red Lincolns. I did somewhat better than I expected. On the other hand, I am winning some that I find unreal. Hopefully the results will live up to my expectations. As a guess, I believe that the supple has gone up more than demand. Well dah!!. What I mean is that there has been a typical increase in demand, but the supply has gone up much more than normal. eBay listing sales (i.e. free gallery now)?
I think ebay coin auctions in general have not been doing very well lately. It seems to me that ebay has become so overridden with junk that the good coins are overshadowed. As a result, many of the reputable dealers have not been placing as many nice, quality coin on ebay. I know my company has not had any coins on ebay lately.
I think there are some buys out there if you watch close. My sales have been steady. As with Rlm, there have been some incredible bargains out there, ex.: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140181854170
I think there are some economic worries that are affecting non-essential purchases of all kinds. (We could argue that coins are essential, couldn't we?!?) I'm not surprised that prices are soft.
I've had stronger bidding and buying since 2nd.week in Nov. so I have been scrambling and staying up late listing coins, I figure it to be a Chistmas rush. Also have had a steep increase in multiple item buyers and have been getting embaressing prices. BUT..... Mercs. last few days are weak, recently sold 21d,26s31d Mercs. way to low. Barber dimes are strong as always. I think the Christmas rush idea is a good expanation and have had inquiries as to shipping time so I know they are gifts.
I have now sold 70+ items since 11/18. I am absolutely astounded at what they are paying for a lot of those coins. I sold a 1932- MS63 RB for $49!!! Gray sheet is only $20. I am sure that some of that is my new camera, but I called it MS63 and they still went to $49, there is something else going on.
I don't sell, but I buy on Ebay, so I can answer why I, as a buyer, haven't bought there in over two months. When the little run up on bullion occured a few months back, it seems sellers were demanding an awful lot for common junk which soon flooded Ebay. When the market settled again, the prices remained the same, and even more junk clogged Ebay. So, instead of wasting my time looking through hundreds of pages of stuff to maybe find a decent coin for a better price than I could find in a store down the street, I quit looking and just went to that store, and online dealers where there were no hassels. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for people who are trying to sell nice coins at reasonable prices, only to be snowed-in by junk sellers who scare away the business. GUy~
I have a fairly newly aquired inventory of coins to sell. So i have to wait and hopefully see some price gains before i sell. Any selling for me in the coming months would only be to cover some unexpected bills. The new market coins(presidential dollars, gold spouse coins, platinum reverse proof sets), have used much of the money that would have been directed at Ebay coin purchases.
Some people will be getting cash for Christmas but many more will be having bills come due after the holidays for all of those nice gifts that they charged.
I broke up the cleaned page in above link....got pretty decent prices on cleaned junkers...$100 on the $31-S, $38 on the 24-D and $8 on the 21-S, about $190 for 9 coins in all, more than I would have spent so I guess it's healthy. 3 vf-20 24-D's have left the store this week at strong prices as well. No more selling for me untill afterJan 1
Hi Everybody, I'm new to this forum and this is my first posting. I decided to join after I read through some threads and found it very usfull and helpful, especially the thread on SGS stuff. I collected coins when I was a kid and only started again after last Christmas when I got a State quarter book. I sure missed alot in the last 30 years. I don't sell on ebay, but I do buy. What one person calls junk might be just the thing a beginner would want and/or can afford to fill that hole in their album. So the word junk means different things to different folks. When I buy, I go for the best condition I can afford, and I'm sure that is what everybody does. It is very easy for a person on ebay to set up their searches to block out some of the lower graded coins and focus on the higher quality stuff. Currently I'm working on a Washinton quater collection in unc. condition. They range from ms 60 to 67. I've been buying many other things on ebay for about 6 years now and have seen the prices go up and down. It is one of those things that just happens. I also collect a couple of patterns of depression glass and china. One pattern I bid on is also bid on by just one other person. If he is not on his computer I can get it for a low price. if he is the price goes up. Sorry, I know I am rambling on, but I guess what I'm tring to say is keep selling because I think ebay is always going to be a rollercoaster ride.
I agree that when silver goes up so do the number of viewers and bidders. Yah I too have noticed the flood of junk coins, there does seem to be fewer quality coins listed, I search constantly and have not come across much of what I want lately.
I was looking at $10 Gold Liberty around MS62 and that same run up in Gold knocked me out. $800 gold? I will wait even if it is a few years.
