He's back: Dad, that is the new promised land (points to Gulag camp) How much tonnes of steel must I produce? Until I come back Deal? Hell no!
That second one, with the rising sun, pointing towards the nearest gulag camp... I speak just barely enough Russian to guess it is one rouble (odien roubli). Is that word in the upper left corner "proletariat" ? ...and I'm really going out on a limb here... "solidarity" on the bottom ? And that third one with John Henry, the steel workin' man... does that say "one politic" in the middle of the left photo ?
900fine, yes you are right, it's a ruble coin and the second coin is actually half ruble (odin poltinnik - i.e. one half) More details about the Soviet motto can be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workers_of_the_world,_unite! Good grief, I know I shouldn't be messing about history but this is pretty wrong
Cool ! I thought "half" was "polovina", or pol for short. "Workers of the world, unite !" Famous last words of The Communist Manifesto. So "prolatariat" = "workers" in this case. Makes sense; they wanted to talk about workers in a "class-struggle" context, rather than the more familiar word "rabochie". And the idea "unite" connects up with "solidarity" ... An excellent example of coins as history and vehicles of national values (or propaganda, depending on your perspective). Those are cool ! I remember when I was a kid seeing a mint set of Soviet coins - I guess they were early 70s. I remember thinking how exotic they seemed. Those are cool... but the Stalin one IS scary, all right ! Czechoslovakian, right ?
I always thought this image was a bit creepy... Zengids of Mosul AE Dirham Qtub ad-din Mawdud Mosul mint, 556 AH
900fine, yes it's Czechoslovkian. So you heard about St. George slaying the Dragon - sure thing, dragons - like they ever existed But what happens when an angel comes to slay other angels?! (Pretty graphic)
Here's one scarier than Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman put together! I actually own of these coins, however, and I kinda like it... but, boy is it scary!!
Again, I'm testing my very clunky Russian skills... I think that reverse (right photo) says "Russian Federation - Arkangelsk Oblast (province)" Is that the Coat of Arms of Arkangelsk ?
