Hey guys! I want to get a metal detector to scan open fields for the burried treasures! Then I thought, why isn't there a metal detecting thread for the coin related finds that you guys get, but before we take this to the next level, I think we need people to come foward and say that they metal detect and would post in the forum thread. So, how bout some support!?

I think its a good idea, possibly as a sub forum in the new coin roll hunting area, after all who says that you have to hunt coins indoors.

Exactly! Maybe they should change the forum to "Coin Hunting" instead of "Coin ROLL hunting"

Sounds like a great idea to me.

I like the idea too. I also have a detector but have only used it a few times and haven't even the slightest idea what a good place would be to use it. So that would definitely make me interested in reading info on a metal detecting thread/forum.

I have one. It's pretty uneventful most of the time. Good ground is hard to come by. After you exhaust all available spots the first year, it's difficult to find new territory. Good ground that is. Some locations of the US are better than others too.

If you get one, I recommend getting a Garret Pro pointer. It comes in handy. I like hearing about other peoples finds. A separate forum would be great.

  10. Sounds like fun id be in as i have done it for 20 or more years.
My finds are not so great as here in this small town most areas have been well covered.
Also getting it ok by the land owners is hard.
Once you ask can you go some think you know there is something of great value to be found and will not let you look.
I just got the ok yesterday to look around an old hotel site in warrenton that some have said was operated by Annie Lee who was the daughter of Robert E Lee.
I would like to read about others finds so count me in.

It is a good idea. People who detect love coins, and many people who love coins also detect. I've got a garret ace 350 at the moment. I hope Peter creates the sub-forum if for any other reason other Coin Forums do have one...

I have a White's XLT and an Garrett Ace 250 as a back-up unit; and a White's Bullseye II. Honestly, I have other forums where I go to for my MD fix. I come to CT to talk the gnitty gritty about coins and nothing else.

I can only give it a "Neutral"....at best. This is "cointalk" and should focus more on the actual coins in my opinion, not how the coins were discovered (at least not enough to have a whole forum dedicated to it)

Then why have a coin roll hunting forum, no one cares how they were discovered, right?

because the proportion of collectors who deal with coin rolls is much greater than those who metal detect (and if you care to, compare the number of posts about roll searching etc with the number of posts about metal detecting, you get the point...)

However small it's still an important aspect of the hobby. And it dosent matter how they're discovered, right? So why have more than one forum total.

But as long as the posts are coin related, why would it matter?

ok guys look, IN MY OPINION, a forum dedicated SOLELY to using a metal detector to poke around and find coins is frivolous. Yes finding a coin anywhere that is rare etc. is an amazing feeling, however to to make a forum about metal detecting? I won't support it. Also while I am not exactly angry, might I offer two cents of advice and that is if one wants to make a poll and include options such as "neutral" or "bad" don't be surprised if people actually disagree with what you want and voice their opinion about it. I simply feel that the forum would be a waste of time and resources. (What if I want to start a forum on coin finds from machine coin-returns?)

I think the OP meant that there would be ONE thread dedicated to metal-detecting, not an entire forum section for metal-detecting.

Hmmm.... Mind if I can borrow that idea for a thread?!
