Hong Kong nickels??

    09S-V.D.B Coin Hoarder

    I found lots of old Hong Kong nickels laying around, most are from the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. Are these coins worth anything in general? Thanks.

    Krause lists most of them at 25¢ to $4.50, depending on condition. 1958H and 1960 errors are worth more and the 1964 is worth quite a bit more.

    If you are talking about the 5c coin, they were discontinued in the late 70s due to inflation and the coin no longer had much purchase power. The lowest denomination in the territory is now the 10c coin. I would keep it just because of that.

    The local colloquial usage for the coin come to mean for something that is very small. The diameter of the last series was just under 16 mm.

    No one really refer them as a "nickel" in that part of the world. That's pretty much a N. American usage. The 5c HKG coin wasn't made with nickel anyway.
