This coin just arrived at my doorstep for addition into my type set, and I have decided to keep the coin. Please guess the grade that NGC assigned to the coin, and please share any comments you may have on the coin -- both good and bad -- they are most appreciated: Seller's images: Have fun...Mike
ok... here's my 2¢ First off, I LOVE the Peace Dollar, and 1921 is one of my favorite coin years, so this one makes my heart race! That said, grading is NOT an emotional exercise, so I will now subjectively grade it. My guess is that NGC said AU55, and that you probably hoped for an MS coin. There is a slight friction seemingly (to me) on the cheek and top of the hair. I also see it on the reverse in the neck shoulder and wing feathers. These are only impressions from viewing the photos supplied, and I have always said that grading from photos is far from a science! hth, mikenoodle
Mike: That reverse is great, and nicely struck. The obverse, obviously, is not as well struck. Considering the bag mark on the cheek, I'd guess around MS-62. Still a beautiful coin. I even like it in lower grades, and think that It still has a lot of price potiential.
Man, she is a beauty! And a toughie to boot. Amazing luster, but I think I agree with mike on the friction, just trying to determine it from a weak strike. I honestly think NGC graded it anywhere from AU 58 to a 62. Final guess, AU-58. Very nice coin though. :thumb: Phoenix
Not having the ANA grading guide with me, but looking at what appears to be a lot of wear on the hair on the obverse and what appears to be a worn rim below the 1 in the 21, I'm going to be the contrarian here and say XF-40.
I am going to guess AU 53 due to the amount of wear in the hair and around the date and little bit of wear on eagle feathers. Very Nice Coin!
I'd definitely like to have to coin to rotate in hand to check for wear, but I'm going to say AU55 for now based on the pics.
I would give it an MS-61. Weak strike (very common for the 1921 Peace). Lots of bag marks. Since I can't see it in hand, I'm assuming that there is no wear.
My grade - 62. And if NGC said any higher I'll be surprised. There's just too many hits on the obverse.
62!! Look at the date? I'm looking at this coin and seeing it as an AU, not even an MS. To my eyes, there is wear on this coin. Ruben
Possibly, but I don't see it based on the pics. This is one of those coins where almost the entire mintage was very weakly struck.
I don't do this to sway you guys, but after careful examination of the coin the area near the date is almost certainly weakly struck and not wear. However, and at this point, I can neither confirm nor deny wear in other areas of the coin. I'll post the grade sometime tomorrow to give others a chance to guess. Have fun and thanks everyone for the comments and guesses thusfar...Mike
I agree with the obverse hits, but that is the nature of these large silvers. Besides, probably went straight from the coining room to the vault for 20 plus years. I was going to say 63, as the usually weak strike of the eagle looks pretty good in this example. JMHO, feel free to disagree with it.
