Here's a coin that's been in my collection for some time -- in fact it was one of the first high-grade slabbed coins I ever bought -- but a coin that has just been reimaged. Please guess the grade PCGS gave to it AND what you grade it. Your thoughts on the coin (both good and bad!) are, as always, most welcomed and appreciated. Have fun...Mike p.s. Bonus points for whoever can identify the variety.
Mike: Nice piece, small motto, and a real unc. Guess: MS63 (or better). Also, some nice Longacre doubling on the reverse (lower right). Longacre doubling is when it has the appearcnce of being a doubled die, see the leaves on the lower right hand side, but it is actually from the die being cut. Also, very common on Indian Head cents, especially on the USA legend.
I would say MS 63. Small letters. The revers has a dent on the E in one. If not for that it could grade higher in my opinion. Also on the reverse the denticals are separated from the rim. The railroad effect. Very nice coin. Lou
Don't have a clue how to grade these so, I will just grade it as Very Nice, I would love to have it sitting in my Type Set!
Lou: I think that could be a struck thru. Look at the area inside the letter E, and you will see an indent that flows with the part on the letter. Could be, not saying definitively, but still a nice coin.
Well it seems this thread as lost a bit of steam, so here's the grade: PCGS MS 63 Small Letters Here are my thoughts on the coin: Probably kept out of a higher holder by the muted obverse luster and area of toning in the lower fields, this coin is attractive with great deal of luster left under the toning. The coin has two planchet defects (as struck). One is in the S of STATES on the obverse, and the other, a larger planchet defect, is visible in the E in ONE on the reverse. The obverse die seems to be a much older die than the reverse, showing some wear along the denticles, whereas the reverse die seems to be much newer, still showing some longacre doubling along the lower wreath. The strike is farily good on the reverse, and the obverse shows some weakeness in the Eagle's leading wing and above the legs centrally and a bit of weakness "ED STA". The reverse is fairly well struck everywhere. Thanks for all the comments and guesses....Mike
