Ever since childhood, I've wanted to own a chain cent. I've finally been able, through a trade, to acquire one -- albeit a very worn example.

Please guess the grade that PCGS assigned to the coin. If your grade differs, please also include your grade. Your comments on the coin, both good and bad, are appreciated -- as always.

The coin is a touch darker in hand, but otherwise the photos are fairly accurate.

    Have fun...Mike

    I'd say a AG-3.

Have fun - no way, more like jealousy - AG-3. My grade and PCGS grade - a problem free coin. Very nice indeed.

I have no "cents" when it comes to cents so I was guessing.

Can it be AG-3 without the date being readable? Nice coin though:). Congrats!

I was leaning between 2 and 4, so I guess I'll be with the "in" crowd and say AG3. :)

It's a very nice coin Mike...Very much problem free and with an absolutely beautiful color!

In this case the answer is "yes". I will admit I answered without looking at my ANA grading book, but i think this coins meets the AG3 grade.

    Yep !

First regular issue USA coin ever, if I recall. Also - reading about people's reactions to it, particularly the chain, gives interesting insights into contemporary America.

I believe that distinction goes to the 1792 half dime, but this is the first copper coin (and fiirst cent) isued by the US mint...Mike

So ya bought it huh ? Hopefully you got the deal you wanted. Either way congrats on the acquisition :thumb:

I'll refrain from a grading opinion since I already know what it is.

    I did, and I did. :)

For those of you wondering at those comments, GDJMSP was aware of the deal while it was in the works. I traded my Liberty Cap for it along with a bit of cash.....
