Please guess the grade that PCGS assigned to the coin. If it helps, this coin is in an OGH.

I think I posted this coin before, but it is a particularly good coin to discuss, methinks....Mike

I think it's a 65 and nice toning and I like that obverse die break

    MS66
    Very nice toning
Deep Scratch on the reverse is holding the coin back from a 67...
    Hope I'm right

I will go with MS-66. I count 5 die cracks. Did I get them all?

What exactly is a die break/crack?

Is it the same as a clashed die on a struck coin where 2 dies clash when there is no planchet between them?

No. It is just what it says. The die is literally cracked resulting in a raised line as the metal flows into the crack.

I'll say 66. nice coin, cool die breaks. :thumb:

I grade it a MS65. Very nice coin - the only distracting feature is that tick mark on the reverse. In the pictures my eye gets drawn straight to it, but I figure much less distracting in hand.

I was collecting these about the time that coin would have been graded.
I thought at the time they were really tough with the grading.
Just a few tiny hits and it got a 64 and I'll guess thats what they gave this coin. I would give it a 65. Really nice coin.

Lol, either you guys are terrible graders, the pics confused you, or PCGS is WAY off...

They graded the coin MS 63, I suspect for some slight luster imparement . This is a prime example of an AU 63 coin, IMO (and having the benefit of having the coin in-hand).

Remember, (and IMO) when the TPGs grade coins in MS and AU grades, it's luster, luster, luster. Said another way, you can often grade these coins simply by making a very careful luster assessment. I've made this comment several times before on this forum, but I think this coin illustrates this credo very well.

Here is a second photo of the coin that shows this wear (and I suspect you all would have graded the coin quite differently from these photos).

The lesson being -- photos are notoriously difficult to use to grade coins, and slight differences in photos can cause wildly changed grades.

Well I think this was a AU63 gone wrong, if you are catching my drift! LOL
This coin looks uncirculated to me...
A nice coin, and if you paid an AU58 price for it... YOU DID GREAT

Sorry, I mistyped my response. Please take another look at the edited version. Also take a look at the photos and tell me if you still think the coin is uncirculated.

Bottom line: The coin graded MS 63, and I got a bit carried away with my AU 63 grades today. :)

WOW! This is a good coin for the grade, and you had me fooled, thinking it was a 66!
    I'm amazed!

I think if you saw the coin in-hand you would agree with PCGS' grade.

A clean 63, maybe an argument for a 64 on eye appeal (great strike, attractive toning, few hits), but with high point wear and luster imparement in the fields the TPGs will typically limit these coins to 64 and below, IMO.

Yes, I don't see a whole lot of any V nickels over a 64, but some in proof go to PF65's, but most MS, are MS63's and MS64's
Maybe NGC would give it MS64 with a STAR...
    You never know ;)
