Here are two more NEWPs. Please guess the grade of the first coin (PCGS graded it), and predict what PCGS will grade the second coin (it is raw):

    1st Coin: EF40
    2nd Coin: AU50

Those are just my guesses, I'm good with grading most coins, but I think large cents are my weak point.. LOL
It will be interesting to see the grades.. :)

The darker one is AU-55. The lighter one is AU-50.

The first one (darker one) AU58 even MS60.
The second one may seem to have some wear, but i think it is just the strike for the variety, so the same AU58 to MS60.

Both are lovely coins. You are on a roll Mike, where are you coming up with these!?

Please show us an early date next 1793-1814.

1st coin AU55 and second coin AU50. I think I see more wear on the second coin and plus I like the strike better on the first coin. Both are beauties.

I expect they graded the 1st AU58, expect they will grade the 2nd AU55.

    Myself, I'd say 53 on the 1st and 50 on the 2nd.

Then you'd agree with PCGS on the first, and EAC on the second. ;)

PCGS graded the first coin 53, and the second coin was graded AU 50 by a strict EAC grader. I think the second coin will end up in a 55 holder when submitted, and I paid significantly more for the 2nd coin than the first. That said, the 2nd coin clearly has more luster in-hand, and is the cleaner coin -- although the photos suggest otherwise (because my crappy, rushed job with a single light has done a poor job of portraying the luster on these coins).

Mike, I nailed the second coin! Seems I'm getting a little better with large cents

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you didn't nail the second one. The coin is raw, and 50 is the EAC grade (not to be confused with the TPG grade, which is what I asked).

That said, I have seen a marked improvement in your grading -- just not on this one. ;)

Keep practicing -- it will come over time. That said, you will not ever become a good grader until you spend a LOT of time looking at coins in-hand. You can never become a good grader using photos -- it is impossible, IMO.

Just practising - N-6 first coin and N-5 second?

Well, I put my grading skills to the test today in Fredericksburg, but I decided just to save my money, and wait for something better to come along...
(1902-O Raw MS64 Morgan and 1882 O MS63 NGC not a great coin for the price)
