I know that this is probably a rehash of a thread that always pops up every few months, but it sometimes feels good to hear other members stories of regret as well.

My question is a little different than the traditional "What coin do you regret selling" question that always pops up. Regret is really not the right word to use, but they always say hind sight is always 20/20.

So here it is..... is there ever something that you bought and later sold because it wasn't worth that much and just taking up space and then a few years later, you find out it has now become the hot ticket and goes for loads more than what you were trying to sell it for???

Here is my latest story. As a few of you know, I am a FS collector. So in addition to the FS coins, I also bought the 2007 and 2008 FS medals. After a while, I just need to make room for other stuff so I stopped buying them and either sold them off or gave them away. I think I even used them as a contest prize because I couldn't sell them if my life depended on it.

Well, I was surfing ebay tonight and saw where the 2007 FS medal set is going for around $50 and the 2008 set is going somewhere in the mid $20s!!!! Man! Who would have thought? I don't regret getting rid of them, but it would be nice to have a do-over! :computer:

Sorry Joe. I have seen those sets on eBay going for that also. I considered them too at one point thinking the designs may look better in bronze than either proof or unc gold but passed thinking of the storage issue and lack of interest if I needed to sell later. I passed on them entirely.

No do over like that, but one of my modern sets two different dealers recommended holding it. Well about 6 months later when I start divesting my collection of moderns this set had dropped about $200.Still made nice chunk of change, but still wish I sold it earlier.

    I know the feeling

About 10 years ago I bought a $20 gold st. gaudens somewhere in the 1920's don't remember wasn't a key, paid about $300 or so...well I needed a new transmission for my motorcyle a few years ago so I traded it to a friend for a trans worth roughly 650, and at the time gold was about 700 spot, but I figured I doubled my money oh well....who would have thought...:headbang:

how about a purchase not made?

How about a purchase not made?

I was watching the debate about purchasing the mint box sets of Lincoln Cents LP1. I was close to purchasing it, then not, then I was, then I wasn't (getting influenced one way or the other by the debate raging on CT). . . and while I was watching the debate as if I was watching a ping-pong match, and trying to decide based on all that -- poof -- they sold out, and prices went through the roof.

We might recall that after the Harrison dollar sets sold out and prices also went through the roof, that the next dollar -- Tylers? -- sold out. Then they came back on sale and everyone here was in a mad rush to get more. I was skeptical, but everybody here was so sure that the prices would jump, I purchased a bunch of sets (and I even remember writing: "I hope you guys know what I'm doing"). Well, deliveries took a while, the price didn't jump so much, and people started regretting their purchase and returning them.

Among other things I learned that this forum has a bunch of folks who have a whole lot of knowledge about coins, but not quite as much knowledge about what prices are going to be in the future. (Mark Twain was rumored to have said something like: "predictions are hard, especially the ones for the future")

So, anyways, in answer to a question not asked: my biggest coin regret was not purchasing the LP1 sets.

    Me too

Several months ago I sold a Walking Liberty 1943 P,D, and S set for 15 bucks. They were my daughter's and I was acting like a big shot thinking I could make her more than melt value. I later found out that she wanted to save them for her kids. I still feel regrets.

But you can still find a set for her, can't you? (OK, maybe it'll cost, but that might be less than the regrets you feel)

That's a great idea. I'll see what I can find before I yell for assistance. Thanks. I was gonna live it but this is better.

Just two months ago, I found a raw XF40 (imo) 1830 Medium letters Large Cent selling on eBay. The max bid was $48 (Redbood...$1200). I was biding my time...getting ready to snipe it. In the meantime, I got into answering a CT thread. By the time I finished, the auction was over...it sold for $48.:headbang::headbang::headbang:

Regret Selling: my 1995 10th annv gold/silver set w/the '95W proof SAE but needed to have a repair done on the house.
Regret not buying: the 2008 gold 4 coin proof buffalo set.

  14. Regret is bot a pleasant feeling. I am a buyer not a seller so cannot relate there. However, I do regret not buying the 2008 buffalo fractional gold coins from the US Mint. :( TC

I've got a friend that gave me a 2008 -S Clad state quarters set. I think he paid $8 for them. He recently saw an ad in a coin magazine selling them for $45. Says he's kidding that he wants them back. I don't think he's kidding around, he knows I don't collect state quarters and he has dollar signs in his eyes...

  19. I don't ever regret selling anything...because I never sell anything!

What I do regret is missed opportunity. I didn't start collecting coins until 2008, when I was 23 years old. I've been collecting various things for more then 2 decades now, I started my first collection in 1985. So think of all the coins I've missed out on!

There was a local shop I used to go to, it was a coin shop but also sold diecast. I was pretty much only interested in the diecast but the owner gave me a 1854 dime, for free. If he was willing to give me that I wonder what he might have had in the shop that I could have purchased. Unfortunatly he went out of buisness in the 90s.

In the Danbury Mall there used to be a Science store. In it they had bins of world coins, not unlike when you see stores with jelly bean dispensers, is how I remember it anyway. I know they were cheap, I got some back then but only about a dozen. What I could have gotten there!

Another local coin shop that I missed out on was right next door to a different diecast shop. I only went in once but I know I got some interesting stuff there, I remember they had other coins but I only got a few. I did purchase a license plate from the 1940s though, with the intent to hang it on my wall...that never happened, and it's still in the bag they gave me, in my closet!

I regret the missed opportunitys for sure...

Being mostly a modern guy, my biggest regret would be not buying two or three of the 2006 20th anniversary gold eagle sets. Could have bought 'em for (in the neighborhood) of $2000 and sold 'em for what back then? $5000? Talk about a missed opportunity. Just didn't have big enough gazoongas. I knew in the back of my mind that these sets would be popular but just couldn't get up the gumption to pull the trigger. On the other hand, had I bought 'em I probably wouldn't have wanted to part with 'em. You see, everything that I've ever purchased I still own. Haven't sold a dang thing since I was a kid....long time LOL. If I'd elected to "pull the trigger" back then I hesitate to think what the 'little women" would have done to me......:) No way on earth I could have hid that transaction in the "books". :)
