Ok, so yesterday I picked this up. I'm just not sure with damaged coins if they really retain any value... opinions? What would the value of this be, at this point? Mostly for my own info.

My friend picked this up first, as part of a larger trade - he traded $10 book-value (numismedia) for it. I decided I wanted it myself, so I traded HIM $70 book-value for it, myself. Now on numismedia, it puts this coin at $345 value in G4 condition, and $680 in XF40. If it wasn't for the hole, it's obviously far better than a G4, but not as good as a 40. But with the hole... I dunno. I traded other coins with a book-value of $70 for it, though, so I am pretty sure it was an OK trade, and am definitely sure I am happy with the trade.

Not sure about your prices, e-bay has an offer of a 3 cent silver AND a 3 cent copper-nickel (what you have) for $55 as a BIN.

I'm confused by your numbers. Numismedia has it at $15 for G4 and $41 in XF40. What site are you looking at? http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/prices/3ncnt/pricesgd.shtml
I'd trade back if it were possible.

$75 to $80 without the hole.

Much nicer examples without a hole are selling for around $30 dollars on ebay. Holed ones for $10 or less.

Ok, so I see where I made a mistake. Now I need to see what can be done about it. I got my value from this page:

    http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/prices/3scnt/pricesgd.shtml

This is the first 3 cent piece I've ever had. I never looked into the type before, and did not even know that they made non-silver ones. When I heard "3 cent nickel" previously, I always just thought it was a name/nickname, rather than a description of the content being no longer silver.

My mistake. Maybe I'll eat the mistake, maybe I'll ask my friend to split the difference or something. We both thought it was the coin I linked.

At least the mistake was under $100. I recommend a little more time researching before buying. It will hopefully save you money in the future.

Very true. And for the rest of the trades that day, at least, I made good deals. This mistake was fully on me, no one took advantage of me, so I feel foolish, but not angry at anyone :)

Feeling foolish is how we learn.
