Howdy peeps, I picked this up recently: I couldn't resist getting it, since it was cheap and by what I can tell, it's a O-109 (R-3). The obverse has distinct die clashing that appears to be identical to a O-109 I looked at on Heritage but I would appreciate confirmation of my attribution. Ribbit
Look closer! :kewl: It says July 1 - 1915. Don't you wonder what that date was about and who did it and where were they when they did it? Ribbit
It just arrived this morning and I hadn't taken the time to study the scribbling until you said something about it and that's when I realized what it said. I was too busy running around on Heritage trying to figure out variety instead. :goofer: Ribbit
Toad - go checkout the 1813 O-109A on coinzip.com - 1813 o-109a. I only see a single leaf are yours - compare the O-109 and O-109A. Looks like that upper berry is floating without a stem.
I think you are correct! Here are more pics so others can compare it to the O-109 & O-109a to see which one ya'll think it is and please post your opinion. Ribbit
BTW - by what I can tell by looking at the O-109a on CoinZip, is the "single leaf" is actually more like a ghost leaf. I can barely make out the missing leaf on the CoinZip example, just like on mine. :kewl: Ribbit
WOW! Thanks for all the pics and angles. I love the altered coin and the graffito date. The date is curious indeed. A lot going on at that time, WW1 for instance. Maybe someone's birth or death date. Would be interesting if this was a coin buried with someone at one time and inscribed with their resting date. Check out Google's Timeline feature for historical date data. Here's the search for July 1, 1915: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&safe=o...line+july+1+1915&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&fp=W_g2WV_9cHQ The Newspaper Archive is an interesting (not free) database online too: http://www.newspaperarchive.com/
I thought about WW1 too but since we didn't get involved for another 2 years, I figure it has nothing to do with it but it has something to do with something. Ribbit
The only thing that bothers me is the upsidedown U above the 8 in the date (die clash). On the 109 mine matches up perfectly but on the 109a, it's further to the left. I'm wondering if the die clashed again, and the U moved a little to the left and mine is still a 109a but an early die state. :goofer: Ribbit
Just a rotation issue on the die causing the position has changed, its a O-109a, based on what I see here. I have seen the motto doubled in that area. Nice Pickup.
Ugly coinz need love too! Kiss I got suckered in because of the price. hya: I have such a hard time saying no to a bargain. Others will look at it as a holed hunk of metal but I see it for what it is/was, not necessarily what it ended up being. Maybe life would better if that's how we treated each other? Ribbit
